This position will support the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping project (ICEX) funded by MIT-Lincoln Labs by providing expertise in acoustics and signal processing. We require a person with experience collecting and processing geophone data to help us analyze data collected as part of the US Navy sponsored ICEX Arctic experiment (March 2024). Ice motion and noise data will also be compared to relevant theory to better understand controlling parameters.

Duties/Responsibilities

Process geophone data (60%)

  • Data processed will be existing data collected during ICEX2024 experiment
  • Processing will get at amplitudes and frequencies of motion of sea ice to discover acoustic and physical resonances.

Compare processing results to theory (20%)

  • A review of relevant literature and theory on ice sheet resonances will be performed.
  • Relevant theory will be coded in MATLAB (preferred) or Python (acceptable).
  • Comparisons between theory and data will be performed to understand controlling parameters

Produce figures and text suitable for reporting (20%)

  • Figures and text will be produced suitable for reporting in publications or in presentations.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Graduate degree in Acoustics

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Coursework in acoustics.
  • Coursework in signal processing.
  • Experience in collecting acoustic and geophone data.
  • Experience in processing acoustic and geophone data.
  • Knowledge of ice properties and noise created by fracturing ice.
  • Matlab or Python programming skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
