Overview

Under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse, the nursing assistant performs various duties in the care and treatment of patients in accordance with established methods and procedures of the Medical Center.

Responsibilities

  • Continuously observes patients' behavior, mental status and activities, notifies RN of any changes or unusual occurrences.
  • Consistently and independently maintains a safe, clean environment for patients.
  • Consistently adheres to established BBMC Close Observation Patient and Suicidal Patient Protocols
  • Consistently and independently documents patient observation data on the Close Observation Supervision Record.
  • Reports maintenance needs.
  • Utilizes universal precautions.
  • Gives accurate report to oncoming shift.
  • Provides patient with explanations as necessary but does not counsel or provide opinions.
  • Escorts patients when leaving the unit for activities and scheduled tests.
  • Demonstrates the ability to set limits for patients and other de-escalation techniques.

  • Ability to follow instructions and report patient behavior accurately

  • Understanding of patient safety and infection control protocols

  • Comfortable working with patients with dementia, mental health issues, or those at risk for falls/self-harm

Credentials

  • BLS – Basic Life Saving Certification

Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent required or must obtain GED within 6 months of hire date.
