Are you ready to take on a pivotal role in designing and optimizing advanced automation systems for manufacturing? As a Senior Automation Design Engineer at our Grand Rapids facility, you’ll leverage your expertise to design manufacturing processes, layouts, and equipment configurations that drive efficiency, productivity, and quality.

In this role, you’ll be responsible for creating sequences of operations, specifying procedures for tool and equipment fabrication, and adapting machine designs to factory conditions. You’ll also inspect machinery performance, initiate corrective actions to address deficiencies, and develop processes that align with statistical process control techniques.

Your work will ensure compliance with regulations, provide technical guidance to engineering teams, and contribute to the seamless integration of automation systems into our production environment - all while supporting continuous improvement and operational excellence.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Troubleshoot equipment with various Controls Platforms (PLC’s, PC, Vision systems, Robotics and SCADA).
  • Proficiency in Allen Bradley’s PLC’s (Micro, Compact and ControlLogix Platforms) and Automation Direct PLC’s (DirectLogic) supporting development software
  • Proficiency with Keyence and Cognex vision system programing
  • Proficiency with Fanuc robotics and associated development software
  • Assure production requirements are achieved for equipment specifications, supplier selection, and qualification.
  • Support and provide equipment specifications to vendors for quoting automated and manual equipment.
  • Verify Equipment meets current NFPA, OSHA and all applicable safety standards.
  • Key participant in DFMEA, PFMEA, Machine Risk Assessments, and CTQ processes assuring specifications are well defined and documented.
  • Communicate and coordinate activities with multiple functional groups both within and outside of operations.
  • Provide technical support to maintenance as required
  • Address appropriately related manufacturing issues on a daily basis as need requires
  • Identifying, solving controls and electrical system related problems, design improvement opportunities and deficiencies

  • Understanding of the UL508A Industrial Control Panels and capable of meeting all NEC requirements for electrical design
  • Experience with Automation

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, OR an advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years of experience.

Nice to Haves

  • Ignition SCADA software experience
  • VORNE production monitoring
  • Machine risk assessment methodology and required electrical safety circuitry is a plus
  • Electrical/control design with focus on conformance to NFPA standards
  • Background in the Medical Device Industry
  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering
  • Ability to Work Independently and with Minimal Supervision
  • Positive and Professional Attitude
  • Ability to Stay Calm and Collected While Managing Competing Priorities

Travel

  • <10% travel annually to manufacturing sites and supplier visits required (domestic).

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$100,000.00 - $150,000.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
