Position Description

The College is proud to provide nationally recognized programs, offering a comprehensive curriculum and support services to open doors, open minds, and open arms to help transform students’ lives. The Child Development & Families Studies department invites applicants to join our efforts in preparing teachers and education professionals, and providing parent education for San Francisco and the Bay Area. In additonal to general child development, Instructors are needed with various subject area expertise including; administration of childcare centers, special needs, working with youth, health and nutrition and sensory & gross motor developmental needs.

Job Duties

1. Teach in person credit and non-credit classes in the Child Development and Family Studies Department as required for certification by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing for the Child Development Permits, Community Care Licensing for Child Care Programs, for use in K-12 pre service pathways, and for certificate and degree acquisition and transfer.

2. Teach in person in the Child Development Lab Schools and Child Observation classes.

3. Teach in person late afternoon, evening, weekend and/or day classes at any of our campus’ in the city as assigned.

4. Maintain accurate daily, weekly, monthly, and semester records that meet department requirements.

5. Develop Child Development curriculum, including Infant/Toddler, Preschool, K-12 and Special Education, Youth Worker, Parent Education curriculum in collaboration with department faculty and participate in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes (SLO’s) and course outline updates.

6. Attend regular faculty meetings and training.

7. Perform other related duties including instructionally-related assignments as assigned by the Department Chair.

11. Support and engage in culturally responsive, inclusive and anti-racist practices as it relates to student success with an awareness of student equity gaps. Participate in ongoing training on diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism to center pedagogy.

12. Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with community college students with disabilities, various sexual orientations, and diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds (Required).

2. Earned Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Human Development, Home Economics/Family and Consumer Studies with a specialization in Child Development/Early Childhood Education, Educational Psychology with a specialization in Child Development/Early Childhood Education; OR THE EQUIVALENT;

OR

Earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any of the above from an accredited institution AND earned Masters Degree from an accredited institution in Social Work, Educational Supervision, Elementary Education, Special Education, Psychology, Bilingual/Bicultural Education, Life Management/Home Economics, Family Life Studies, or Family and Consumer Studies; OR THE EQUIVALENT;

OR

Hold a fully-satisfied LIFE California Community College Instructor Credential in Nursing School and Pre-School Education (California credentials were no longer issued after July 1, 1990).

Desirable Qualifications

1. Successful experience in planning, implementing, and supervising a child development program for Early Childhood students, parents and preschool/school-age children.

2. Additional graduate work in Child Development/Early Childhood Education beyond the Master’s Degree.

3. Demonstrated ability to teach lower division lecture Child Development/Early Childhood Education courses.

4. Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm to teach students who have challenging needs which require individual attention.

5. Successful community college teaching experience in an urban setting.

6. Successful experience working with community based service organizations.

7. Demonstrated understanding of San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), K-12 classrooms and schools, and care and education in a variety of settings.

8. Demonstrated ability to teach coursework in two or more of the following specialty areas: Special Needs, Youth Worker, K-12 Teacher Preparation, Infant/Toddler, Center administration and development, Child Development Center Practicum, Parent Education.

9. Possession of a current Program Director Level Child Development Permit from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (see Application Procedure #7).

10. Demonstrated ability to speak Cantonese, Mandarin, or Spanish or possess demonstrated experience working successfully with ESL and limited English speaking students.

11. Evidence of successful instructional experience at the university or college level using culturally responsive pedagogy.

12. Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of inequities in higher education and a commitment to rectifying policies and processes that restrict access for historically minoritized and disproportionately impacted students.
