Position Description

The Visual Media Design Department is looking to hire faculty to teach graphic design, typography, digital skills, and digital illustration courses. We seek applicants who can help instruct and demonstrate competency and sensitivity working with diverse students, with the commitment to maintain equity, diversity, and inclusion among all students of diverse backgrounds.

2. Teach in accordance with Department course outlines, practices, and policies.

3. Design instructional activities and evaluations that promote student learning and achievement.

4. Perform duties associated with instructing and assessing student progress including, but not limited to: developing a syllabus, grading, record-keeping, submitting census and grades, student learning outcome assessments, designing written lesson plans, leading classroom activities, and using technology-enhanced teaching.

5. Participate in departmental and college-wide functions such as committee work, staff meetings, professional development, and assessment of student learning outcomes.

6. Hold scheduled office hours for students.

7. Teach credit classes at the Ocean Campus and/or Mission Center.

8. Teach day and/or evening classes as required.

9. Teach in-person or online classes as required.

10. Supports an innovative culture of culturally responsive, inclusive and anti-racist practices as it relates to student success with a goal toward addressing and reducing student equity gaps.

11. Participates in ongoing training on diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism as it pertains to improving systems of higher education for historically minoritized and disproportionately impacted student groups and employees.

12. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with community college students with disabilities, various sexual orientations, and diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

2. Earned Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution, or equivalent foreign degree, plus two years of professional experience directly related to the faculty member’s assignment; OR THE EQUIVALENT;

OR

Earned Associate Degree from an accredited institution, or equivalent foreign degree, plus six years of professional experience directly related to the faculty member’s assignment; OR THE EQUIVALENT;

OR

Hold a fully-satisfied LIFE California Community College Instructor Credential in Communication Services and Related Technologies, including Printing OR Art and Design, including Photography (California credentials were no longer issued after July 1, 1990).

Desirable Qualifications

1. Earned Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Graphic Design, Illustration, or related discipline.

2. Awareness of contemporary trends in graphic design, typography, or illustration.

3. Experience teaching college-level design courses in a creative and innovative way.

4. Minimum three (3) years of successful recent work experience in graphic design, typography, illustration, or another area of design practice.

5. Demonstrated skills and experience with industry-standard design and production software: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and other relevant software.

6. Demonstrated ability to use/troubleshoot Macintosh computer hardware, software, and common peripherals.

7. Knowledge of career opportunities, trends, and requirements in visual communication fields.

8. Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

9. Demonstrated commitment to student learning.

10. Evidence of successful leadership experience at the university or college level of promoting a culture of inclusivity, equity-mindedness, diversity and anti-racism.

11. Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of inequities in higher education and a commitment to rectifying policies and processes that restrict access for historically minoritized and disproportionately impacted students.
