Summary

Reports to the Executive Director, Operations at Elkhart General Hospital. Serves as the leader of assigned hospital services at Elkhart General Hospital, providing strategic leadership to ensure a full and holistic continuum of services structured to meet operational and patient needs. Guides the development of the overall business and strategic plans, establishes goals for mission effectiveness, quality, and financial management, and ensures alignment with Elkhart General Hospital and Beacon Health System (BHS). Is accountable for the overall performance of assigned hospital services, ensuring integration with system-wide initiatives. The Director is expected to maintain both a departmental and institutional perspective, ensuring that decisions support the broader integration of the health system. The role also requires broad operational experience across multiple service areas, including ancillary, support, and/or clinical services, and an ability to balance department-level financial management with enterprise-level strategy to ensure long-term sustainability and prudent resource allocation.

Strategic and Operational Leadership

  • Provides administrative oversight and direction for assigned hospital services, ensuring the highest standards of efficiency, financial performance, and compliance.
  • Leads the development and execution of strategic initiatives that enhance hospital operations and align with system-wide goals.
  • Maintains a departmental and institutional perspective, ensuring that decisions support the broader integration of the health system.

Financial and Quality Management

  • Directs operational and financial planning for assigned service areas, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with budgetary goals.
  • Balances department-level financial management with enterprise-level strategy, ensuring that resources are allocated prudently and that decision-making supports long-term financial sustainability.
  • Oversees and monitors key performance indicators related to service efficiency, regulatory compliance, and financial outcomes.
  • Implements continuous improvement methodologies to enhance service performance and operational effectiveness.
  • Ensures adherence to all regulatory, accrediting, and compliance requirements within assigned hospital services.
  • Maintains awareness of external healthcare trends, including reimbursement models, legislation, and alternative care delivery models, to inform strategic decisions.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Develops strong partnerships with hospital leadership, department heads, and service teams to ensure alignment of services with hospital and community needs.
  • Encourages administrators to act as mediators, facilitators, and champions for innovation, identifying opportunities to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Works closely with system leadership, external partners, and regulatory agencies to advance organizational goals and ensure service excellence.

Talent and Culture Development

  • Leads, mentors, and develops department leaders, fostering a culture of accountability, engagement, and professional growth.
  • Calls for mentoring and coaching staff to develop leadership and management skills across all levels of the organization.
  • Encourages leaders to model and promote operational excellence through coaching, professional development, and succession planning.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies, and department-specific education within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout the fiscal year.
  • Direct service providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect self and others.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey processes, and compliance.
  • Complies with established organizational and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (required) in Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or a related field. Master’s degree (preferred) in a similar discipline. Demonstrated leadership skills in past positions, consistent with and necessary to carry out the mission and leadership philosophy of Beacon Health System. Must maintain any pertinent applicable certifications and licenses.

  • Strong understanding of hospital operations, financial management, service efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

Working Conditions
