Job Summary

Under general supervision, and in collaboration with the Chair and faculty undergraduate advisers, provide comprehensive academic advising to undergraduate students in the assigned majors and minors. Interpret and implement policies, including transfer admission, and administer undergraduate activities for the undergraduate programs.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

• Experience providing counseling and guidance to undergraduate students in a higher education environment.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills to anticipate issues and to devise and implement change/solutions.
• Knowledge of policies and procedures pertaining to undergraduate programs and admissions.
• Skills to assess college transcripts and accurately calculate course grades and grade point averages, balances and deficiencies including interpreting community college and institution transcripts for equivalency.
• Ability to learn and use a variety of general and specialized software.
• Interpersonal and listening skills to relate effectively with a diverse group of people and cultures, to understand personal and social problems faced by college students, and to comprehend the specialized needs of students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Skill to recognize student academic or personal problems requiring specialized professional attention and make well-chosen referrals.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with UC Davis student information systems (Banner, OASIS, DESII, Degree Cert).Experience directing the work of student assistants.
• Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills. Knowledge of admissions criteria for new students; knowledge of articulation agreements with other universities/colleges for transfer students, and the applicability of credit from other institutions.

Department Overview

Languages & Literatures is a diverse unit that includes following departments and programs: Classics, Comparative Literature, Critical Theory, East Asian Languages and Cultures (Chinese and Japanese), French & Italian, German & Russian, Humanities, Human Rights, Religious Studies, and Spanish & Portuguese. These departments and programs constitute a large instruction and research unit within the College of Letters and Science. The unit also administers the UC Davis Language Center. Currently we employ approximately 300 individuals including more than 100 faculty and lecturers. The student population consists of approximately 100 graduate students and 500 undergraduates. Languages & Literatures programs attract and serve faculty, scholars, and students from around the globe. The staff seek to support an inclusive community and provide excellent service.

Work Environment

• UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
