TxDOT's San Angelo District is looking for a Material/Process Inspector I, II or III in our District Laboratory. This position assists in the material quality assurance program for the district’s roadway construction program and will perform duties such as sample collection, material testing and inspection of material manufacturing. Salary Plan/Grade:

Material/Process Inspector I (B18): $45,521 - $71,055 yearly

Material/Process Inspector II (B19): $48,244 - $76,028 yearly

Material/Process Inspector III (B20): $51,158 - $81,351 yearly

The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position offered based on the applicant's work experience, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Position Description

Material/Process Inspector I & II: Performs material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants or at points of supply. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Material/Process Inspector III: Performs complex material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants or at points of supply. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties

Essential Duties for Material/Process Inspector I include:

  • Conducts nuclear density tests on subgrade, base and asphaltic concrete pavement
  • Conducts pavement evaluations in the field
  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors and material producers and suppliers
  • Keeps equipment mileage and service records and schedules equipment repairs
  • Maintains field record books for each construction project within assigned area office
  • Performs tests and inspection duties
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Essential Duties for Material/Process Inspector II include those listed above and:

  • Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements
  • Coordinates core drill or auger rig operations

Essential Duties for Material/Process Inspector III include all those listed above and:

  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors, material producers and suppliers and field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

    • Material/Process Inspector I: No experience required
    • Material/Process Inspector II: 1 year experience in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering-related work*
    • Material/Process Inspector III: 2 years of experience in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering-related work*
  • Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Must have or obtain the following required certifications listed below within 12 months of date of hire:

  • HMA Roadway Spec-IB
  • Cert Soils & Flex Bases SB202

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise and vibration
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Stooping-bending, body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
  • Standing or walking for prolonged periods of time
  • Grasping-applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm
  • Repetitive motion - substantial movements of the wrists, hands or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading; using measurement devices or assembly or fabrication parts
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles; determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures
