The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible to the Unit Nurse Manager and/or Nursing Supervisor. The RN defines, gives, coordinates and evaluates the total nursing care of an assigned group of patients. The OR RN functions in the circulating RN role or scrub RN role. The incumbent applies the nursing process within their scope of practice as defined by the Oregon State Board of Nursing. Work includes assessing, developing, and implementing an individualized plan of care in collaboration with physicians, interdisciplinary teams and the patient and family throughout the surgical care phase.
Qualifications:
- Current Oregon Registered Nuse license without restriction
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (CPR) required
- Current AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required
- Current AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required
- Certified Nurse in Operating Room (CNOR) preferred
- Minimum two-year perioperative nursing experience preferred.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure compassionate, collaborative, and professional nursing care throughout the surgical care phase as assigned by the supervisor/manager or designee.
- Support the availability of after-hours surgical services by sharing in an equitable call rotation, including weekends and holidays.
- Organize patient care by prioritizing, delegating, delivering, and evaluating care on an ongoing and timely basis.
- Gather and interpret patient information with accuracy; perform and document nursing assessments and procedural activity.
- Verify presence of all necessary surgical equipment, supplies, medications with validation of sterility.
- Implement appropriate patient interventions in accordance with current AORN standards.
- Assist and support the anesthesia needs for airway management, blood administration and line placement; other tasks as needed.
- Consult with providers and supervisors (e.g. Charge Nurse, Manager or designee) as appropriate to determine best treatment plans for patients.
- Advocate for the ethical and holistic care of patients from diverse backgrounds promoting autonomy, dignity, and health.
- Contribute to assigned work unit by demonstrating a commitment to competent professional nursing practice and engaging in opportunities for professional growth.
- Stay informed about professional trends and adhere to policies, procedures, and standards of care, including safety / risk management, regulatory requirements, and AORN guidelines.
- Identify opportunities for, and actively participate in, performance and quality improvement activities to improve clinical outcomes, healthcare delivery systems, and address patient safety and satisfaction.

- Ability to adjust to changing priorities and increased workloads in order to meet patient care demands in all surgical procedures.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage time effectively for the provision of patient care.
- Ability to operate and monitor relevant equipment within surgical services.
- Ability to interpret, prepare and maintain patient information using the electronic medical record.
- Skilled in making sound decisions and practicing critical thinking, especially when responding to urgent and emergent situations.
- Skilled in therapeutic communication with the ability explain complex medical topics.
- Skilled in performing service recovery to promote a positive patient experience, addressing complaints before they become grievances and escalating issues to supervisors for resolution as appropriate.
- Knowledge of health equity and ability to provide age-specific, culturally competent care that considers the patient’s physical, psychosocial, and socioeconomic needs.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Ability to lift 50 pounds with frequent lifting/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Able to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently
- Needs ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on telephone
- Requires frequent use of computer
- Must demonstrate manual dexterity
- Occasional exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue, communicable diseases, chemicals, including but not limited to sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items. Employee eligible for Hepatitis B Vaccination if desired.
