Staff Engineer – Robotics Test Engineer

Location: Ireland

Team: Edge AI Group, Analog Devices Inc. (ADI)

Analog Devices’ Edge AI team is on a mission to redefine how machines perceive and interact with the world. We’re building real-time, intelligent systems that combine world-class sensor technology with cutting-edge AI — at the Edge, where milliseconds matter.

We’re seeking a Staff Robotics Test Engineer to take ownership of hardware-based data collection and validation workflows, with a strong emphasis on real-world sensor data gathering, robotic use cases, and hardware-in-the-loop evaluation. This role will also involve testing and certifying simulation assets to ensure they meet the highest standards for deployment.

In this role, you will leverage your expertise in hardware and sensor validation to design and execute robust data collection pipelines and test cases for validating sensor assets. Collaborating closely with simulation and AI engineers, you will play a key role in ensuring that real-world sensor data and test results align seamlessly with simulation environments, helping to bridge the gap between simulation and reality.

Responsibilities

  • Real-world data gathering: Design and execute data collection pipelines for sensors and robotic systems, ensuring high-quality datasets for AI model training and simulation accuracy.
  • Leverage hands-on expertise with sensors such as ToF, RGB-D, LiDAR, and IMUs to design test cases and define metrics for validating simulation assets, ensuring they meet deployment standards.
  • Sim-to-real alignment: Collaborate with simulation and AI teams to align hardware test outputs with virtual environments, focusing on closing the sim-to-real gap.
  • Safety protocols: Develop and implement safety protocols for deploying RL agents on physical hardware, ensuring safe and reliable operation in real-world scenarios.
  • On-site support: Support on-site setup, testing, and troubleshooting of robotic platforms and sensor arrays as needed.

Qualifications

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in sensor validation, hardware integration, or robotics hardware testing.
  • Strong, hands-on experience with ToF and RGB-D sensors — both hardware setup and data characterization.
  • Proven track record designing or executing structured data collection campaigns in physical environments.
  • Experience with safety-critical systems or working with physical hardware in a controlled testing environment (e.g., collision avoidance, redundancy, error handling).

Bonus Experience

  • Experience with fixed-arm robotics systems and motion capture or pose estimation tools.
  • Familiarity with ROS or ROS2, especially for integrating real-time data capture or managing sensor drivers.
  • Exposure to simulation environments (e.g., Isaac Sim, Gazebo) to support hybrid testing or validation.
  • Experience supporting AI/ML teams with structured, annotated, and high-quality ground-truth datasets.
  • Experience with Reinforcement Learning (RL), particularly in the context of safe deployment of RL agents on physical robots, including the application of safety protocols and risk mitigation strategies.
