Main Tasks:

• Explore and address the demand and opportunities for digitalization of R&D in Asia Pacific with R&D sites in China, India, etc.
• Responsible for the strategic development and the execution of all activities in Digitalization & Automation of R&D in Asia Pacific under BASF Group Research
• Build up and lead the Digitalization of R&D teams under BASF Group Research in Shanghai and in Nanjing
• Administratively lead and support the development of Lab Automation team under Group Research as well as Lab Digital Solution team under Global Digital Services in Shanghai
• Set up and align projects and capabilities within our global organization Digitalization of R&D
• Responsible for and lead the strategic project to design and build up R&D digital infrastructure and landscape for BASF Innovation Campus Shanghai
• Represent the region in the leadership team of the global Digitalization and Automation of R&D and Innovation Management, Group Research
• Represent Digitalization of R&D in the Asia Pacific R&D leadership team
• Lead and manage scientists for scientific modeling working on state of the art first principle modeling techniques using our Supercomputer: quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics, reaction kinetics, computational fluid dynamics.
• Lead and manage scientists for data science, e.g. statistics, machine learning & AI for science, data management.
• Keep closely connected to internal management team and management of relevant R&D partners.
• Grow network in academia and other innovation partners, especially in China. Initiate and maintain a project pipeline with external partners.
• Be responsible for group budget and cost.
• Coaching of the team in technical skills during project execution and in development of soft skills.
• Development of team members in expert and leadership career tracks.
• Drive the digital transformation in the Asian R&D community, especially nurture awareness and need for action in R&D management team.

Requirements:

• PhD in chemistry, material physics, life science or other natural science discipline with at least 7 years professional experience in R&D and R&D management positions in industry; or Master Degree in the same disciplines with at least 10 years professional experience in R&D and R&D management positions in industry.
• International experience would be a plus.
• Strong and rich project experience with digital tools for R&D: modeling and simulation, data science, IT systems for laboratories.
• Broad domain knowledge in research and development of chemicals, materials and chemical industrial processes, as well as knowledge in IT & AI including infrastructure and applications.
• Strong skills for communication with experts and non-experts. Strong communication to senior management.
• Negotiation skills for internal project budget acquisition.
• Strong management skills in complex and ambiguous situations.
• Strong leadership skills in large and complex teams with flat hierarchies.
• Ability to coach and develop team members with different technical background and different matureness.
