Position Information

TxDOT's Galveston-Bolivar Ferry Operations is looking to hire safety orientated employees to work in the communication hub of the Ferry Operation. TxDOT Galveston-Bolivar Ferry is a 24/7, 365 days inland maritime operation based out of Galveston, Texas. We safely transport vehicles and passengers on a 3-mile route between Galveston and Port Bolivar, Texas. TxDOT provides a variety of resources to help our employees succeed. Position Description

Marine Comm Coordinator I

Performs as marine communications coordinator for a marine unit transporting crew members, public vehicles and passengers. Work requires frequent contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Marine Comm Coordinator II

Performs as senior marine communications coordinator for a marine unit transporting crew members, public vehicles and passengers. Work requires frequent contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Marine Comm Coordinator I

  • Answers public inquiries to include schedule information and coordinates emergency responses with various local, county, state and federal agencies.
  • Assists in coordinating administrative and maintenance requirements for operational ferries.
  • Ensures the proper routing of all after-hours messages, records, reports and documents.
  • Maintains and submits daily log of vessel movements, watch activities, personnel matters and unusual occurrences or special events.
  • Maintains continuous land line communications with the general public and VHF-FM marine communications with operational ferries.
  • Monitors personnel arrivals and departures.
  • Notifies appropriate support personnel and/or supervisors of problems and other pertinent information affecting the operational capability of ferry vessels and all matters of consequence with the public.
  • Recalls relief and repair personnel as required or directed.
  • Transmits and receives routine and emergency operational and administrative informal voice message traffic.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Marine Comm Coordinator II

Includes all essential duties listed for Marine Comm Coordinator I as well as:

  • Assists in coordination of traffic control with local law enforcement during summer months.
  • Assists in overseeing and monitoring personnel arrivals and departures.
  • Assists in overseeing the operation and maintenance of continuous land line communications with the general public and VHF-FM marine communications with operational ferries.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Marine Comm Coordinator I

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: 1 year experience in marine operations, including radio communications. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • For Galveston Ferry Operations: Must have or obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within ninety (90) days of the date of hire.

Marine Comm Coordinator II

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: 3 years' experience in marine operations, including radio communications. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Includes all competencies listed for Marine Comm Coordinator I as well as:

  • Proficient skill in:
    • Monitoring and evaluating progress on work assignments, customer commitments, processes etc., to ensure timely and successful completion of assigned task
    • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Marine Comm Coordinator I and II

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs. at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing - perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
  • Close Visual Acuity - work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
