Summary

The Tulane University Innovation Institute (TUII) is designed to help bridge the gap between university research and the marketplace/public sphere, catalyzing the real-world impact of Tulane’s world-class, audacious research. This includes commercialization efforts centered around a gap fund/proof and launching new startups. The Innovation Fellow (IF) will be responsible for interfacing with the research apparatus at Tulane, including faculty, staff, and trainees, to identify and de-risk candidate projects for commercialization, as well as developing their own startup over a two-year fellowship program (with the option to extend for a third year at the discretion of TUII leadership). This will involve meeting with university scientists, attending internal and external research-focused events, and activities related to startup formation.

The IF supports the TUII with all aspects of innovation and commercialization by:

  • Scout for and assess potential new Tulane research-based technologies
  • Identifying potential projects and building new collaborations between the University and relevant partners
  • Supporting internal analytics to help determine focus/strength areas of commercializable research
  • Developing a new deep technology startup

The IF works at the direction of the Executive Director of Commercialization as a member of TUII and in cooperation with all internal, pertinent offices such as in-house counsel, the University Office of Research, the Office of Technology Transfer, IRB, Office of Advancement, Communications and Marketing, etc.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • An entry-level knowledge of translational research in biomedicine, chemistry, physical sciences and engineering, and/or biotechnology and of product development.
  • An entry-level understanding of industry, VC and non-traditional funding sources as well as academia collaboration practices.
  • Ability to interact effectively in academic and corporate cultures and to bridge those cultures.
  • Ability to work with diverse constituencies.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strategic thinking: ability to link research capabilities with market needs and trends to identify opportunities for innovations and collaborations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated potential for “sales abilities.”
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask, follow-direction as needed but work independently, and ensure timely completion of work on complex assignments.
  • Highly self-motivated individual with ability to grow to independently represent TUII and the university at large.
  • Ability to use/willingness to learn to use various software programs (such Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PartneringOne, JuJu Ma, Bio One-to-One, Wellspring Sophia.).
  • Desire and drive to establish and launch a technology-backed startup.
  • Must be able to meet established deadlines and take on new responsibilities as needed.

Required Education and/or Experience

  • PhD in STEM, MD, or DVM
  • 0-3 years experience in pharma/life sciences industry, engineering/physical sciences, academic technology transfer, corporate business development or equivalent industry experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Tulane research strengths.
  • Work in academic, non-profit or corporate scientific settings (University, Research Institiute, Company, VC Firm, Foundation).
  • Startup/university spinout experience.
