Under the general direction of the Dean and/or Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS) provide direction and management for the Technical Service Center (TSC). This position has significant impact across 9 departments and 8 buildings on campus with impacts affecting CEPS 2100+ students, 300+ faculty and staff. The TSC professional staff are responsible for managing, repairing and advising the purchases of technical equipment for all 9 departments located across campus within CEPS.

The TSC staff work with faculty and students to design and build academic and research equipment and systems across all CEPS departments. This position requires diverse technical knowledge to coordinate the wide array of technical expertise and projects. The TSC director works with UNH Facilities to ensure CEPS facilities meet the needs of these technical programs. In addition, the TSC director works with UNH Environmental Health and Safety to ensure faculty, staff and students are trained to perform research, class labs and projects in a safe and efficient manner.

Duties/Responsibilities

Direct and plan the work of the CEPS TSC staff: (20%)

  • The TSC includes staff that are Engineers, IT professionals, Scientist and a machinist. They support CEPS 9 departments across 8 buildings.
  • This position manages the TSC online work requests and the CEPS equipment database.
  • This position manages the shop staff and directs the purchase of the equipment needed for the CEPS machine shop.
  • In addition, this position must work with the Dean, department chairs and faculty to evaluate technical support needed for implementing college strategic goals. This includes recommending measures to improve delivery of technical services across the College with the goal of continuous improvement.
  • The TSC director initiates plans to motivate workers to achieve goals, directs and coordinates project work with outside companies to support coordination with NH industry.

Manage the Operation and Maintenance of CEPS Buildings, Laboratory and machine shop spaces: (30%)

  • This position is responsible for the maintenance and safe operation of all testing equipment in CEPS, laboratory spaces, machine shops and the CEPS Makerspace. These responsibilities include maintaining the operation manuals and maintenance records for all equipment in CEPS, training students to safely work on individual machines and the installation and coordination of all new equipment to support undergraduate and graduate teaching and research efforts.
  • The TSC director also manages the CEPS Makerspace including machine maintenance, student training and hours of operation.
  • The TSC director is responsible for building security, including closed circuit camera monitoring, and the card access management for Kingsbury Hall and all laboratory spaces.
  • This work is coordinated with all the members of the TSC and managed by the TSC director.

Coordinate with UNH Facilities and UNH IT for CEPS Space: (30%)

  • This work is coordinated with the University Instrumentation Center and CEPS Olson Advanced Manufacturing Center.
  • The TSC director is the Facilities manager for CEPS, responsible for evaluating space needs and management of CEPS construction projects and coordinating CEPS strategic space projects with UNH Asset Management and Facilities senior personnel. This includes all CEPS facilities across 8 buildings and several off campus and field locations.
  • This position is also the Building Emergency Coordinator, who has worked with UNH EH&S to develop an Emergency Operation Plan for Kingsbury Hall and other CEPS buildings and will coordinate the implementation of such plans.
  • This position interfaces with CEPS IT support including Work with USNH CIO and IT staff to evaluate CEPS and UNH’s network security and develop strategy for implementing continuous improvements. This work involves continually working with IT staff across campus and within CEPS to ensure network infrastructure and endpoint user’s PC systems are continually maintained.
  • Additionally, this position oversees the CEPS managed AV systems and digital displays throughout the college.

Coordinate with UNH Environmental Health and Safety/Emergency Management/Special Events for CEPS: (20%)

  • Work with UNH Environmental Health and Safety to ensure faculty, staff and students are trained to perform research, class labs and projects in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Coordinate development and implementation of Emergency Operation plans across all CEPS buildings with UNH Assistant Director of Emergency Management.
  • This position is the Building Emergency Coordinator for Kingsbury Hall as well.
  • This position advises and assists CEPS Deans and Department chairs with development and implementation of college strategic goals and other duties as assigned. Including but not limited to working with foundation personnel to advance CEPS Strategic Initiatives.
  • This position also support the planning and set up for URC, Graduation, college tours, etc.

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or physical sciences with 5 years of proven supervisory experience in higher education within a technical field.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong organizational and supervisory skills and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • The ability to speak effectively before groups of constituents.
  • Strong team player, ability to prioritize diverse demands, interpersonal and customer service skills. Working knowledge with windows operating systems and network configurations.
  • Working knowledge and ability to diagnose and repair technical equipment and/or instrumentation used in teaching and research laboratories.
  • Familiarity with building systems and construction methods.
  • Diverse knowledge and experience in engineering and physical science fields of education and research.
  • Experienced senior large scale project management preferred.
  • Facilities management, Environmental Health & Safety knowledge, procurement experience, electrical, mechanical and IT Knowledge desirable.
