Summary

Performs laboratory procedures in phlebotomy (venous and capillary blood draws) and EKG&rsquos. Inputs collection and receipt times into Laboratory Information System, cancels and orders tests as necessary. Registers patients and completes specimen check in process in HIS for-laboratory testing. Places laboratory orders in Epic utilizing manual paper requisitions from outside facilities. Draws blood at external facilities (nursing homes) and transports lab specimens from external facilities to CWH lab.

Position Reports To: Laboratory Manager

Essential Functions

  1. Draws blood samples and treats patients in a respectful courteous manner.
  2. Provides patients instruction regarding lab sample collection.
  3. Properly identifies patient prior to and after blood collection.
  4. Labels samples according to policy.
  5. Orders and cancels lab tests in HIS per Physician direction.
  6. Collects and receives specimens individually and on tracking lists.
  7. Performs EKG&rsquos per policy.
  8. Assists in orientation and training new employees and students in phlebotomy and EKG.
  9. Researches specimen requirements for reference laboratory testing.
  10. Prepares laboratory specimens for designated departments/locations prior to laboratory analysis and testing, such as staging of specimens, centrifuge, separate and aliquot specimens.
  11. Correctly identifies proper tubes, containers, transport media, and storage requirements for each test type.
  12. Loads instruments with barcoded patient specimens under direction of MLT/MT.
  13. Delivers specimens to the testing areas and prepares excess specimen samples for storage.
  14. Identifies problems and opportunities to improve patient services.
  15. Answers telephone calls in a respectful courteous manner.
  16. Stocks phlebotomy trays.
  17. Draws blood samples at external facilities (nursing homes).
  18. Transports lab specimens from external facilities to CWH lab using CH vehicle.
  19. Required to maintain active Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.
  20. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School graduate.
  • Medical Assistant &ndash Phlebotomist (MA-P) eligible.

Desired:

  • Course work in anatomy physiology medical terminology.
