POSITION OVERVIEW:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory¿s Accelerator Directorate ¿ Technical Planning Department seeks a student intern with an interest in operations planning, workflow optimization, and risk analysis. The selected candidate will assist in documenting and improving the end-to-end production planning and logistics processes used by SLAC's Fabrication Service Centers (MFD, TPD, APF). This position supports SLAC¿s internal fabrication shops, which produce and assemble precision components for accelerator projects.

The intern will work under the direction of the Lead Manufacturing Engineer and collaborate across engineering, planning, production, and material handling teams. This role is intended for a student pursuing a degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering, Engineering Management, or a closely related field. Flexible part-time hours are available during the academic year.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Support the mapping of the full fabrication workflow from engineering intake through to final delivery and storage, using process mapping tools (e.g., flowcharts, Gantt charts, spaghetti diagrams).
  • Document current processes and identify inefficiencies or redundancies in data entry, tool use, or material handoffs.
  • Collaborate with engineers, coordinators, and material handlers to collect pain points, packaging practices, and communication gaps.
  • Assist in building a live risk matrix, cataloging workflow challenges, and proposing mitigation strategies based on severity and impact.
  • Help assess and recommend harmonization strategies for packaging, labeling, and logistics handling practices.
  • Contribute to a phased roadmap for process improvements, quick wins, and SOP updates.
  • Support internal presentations with visualizations and summary documentation of findings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support continuous improvement and organizational learning.

Note: This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible temporary-nonexempt, internship position (work at 50% full-time equivalent or more, not to exceed 980 hours in six consecutive months.) Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age and currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated and have US work authorization. All accepted candidates must have or be able to timely acquire US work authorization.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Enrollment in a BS or MS program in Industrial and Systems Engineering, Engineering Management, or related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and visualize workflow processes and identify opportunities for efficiency improvements.
  • Exposure to or experience with Lean Six Sigma, FMEA, SPC, or related quality methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of tools such as Excel, PowerPoint, Minitab, Power BI, or equivalent analytics software.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to document technical and operational findings clearly.
  • Self-motivation, curiosity, and a willingness to ask questions and propose solutions.
  • Ability to work independently with regular check-ins from a mentor or project lead.

Desired Skills and Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with material handling and shop floor operations in a manufacturing or research environment.
  • Experience creating SOPs or process documentation.
  • Prior internship or coursework involving planning systems, quality control, or process engineering.

The expected pay range for this position is $24.20 to $29.15 per hour. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
