Job Description
The City of Chesapeake’s Department of Public Works is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Traffic Engineer II/Engineer III with a strong background in traffic engineering, traffic modeling, and technical leadership. The ideal candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of traffic engineering principles and demonstrated experience leading professional teams to deliver high-quality studies on time and within scope.
Key responsibilities include overseeing the City’s Traffic Calming Program, reviewing Traffic Impact Analyses, and evaluating Maintenance of Traffic Plans. Familiarity with traffic signal timing and signal system operations is essential.

Proficiency in traffic engineering software and modeling tools (e.g., Synchro, VISSIM, AutoCAD) required.
Virginia DEQ Certified Plan Reviewer and/or Program Administrator for SWM is required within 12 months of employment.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license desired for Engineer II. Engineer III requires a PE license.
Virginia DEQ Certified Plan Reviewer and/or Program Administrator for SWM is required within 12 months of employment.
