The Senior Architect – Instructional Data Integrations leads the technical design and implementation of integration strategies connecting Houston ISD’s student systems with instructional platforms. This includes the SIS, LMS, testing platforms, special programs, and state reporting tools. The Senior Architect ensures data flows are secure, scalable, and maintainable, and that student information is delivered in real time or near real time to systems used by educators, students, and families.
1. Design and manage integration architecture between the SIS and instructional systems including LMS, assessments, and SPED platforms.
2. Define data flow standards, schema mappings, and transformation logic for student, course, and enrollment data.
3. Lead development of new APIs, middleware solutions, or automation scripts that ensure timely and accurate data sharing.
4. Monitor integration jobs, error logs, and system performance to ensure seamless data movement.
5 Partner with academic leaders and application owners to define functional requirements and technical specifications.
6. Ensure compliance with FERPA and HISD’s internal data privacy and security standards.
7. Develop reusable components and templates for common data flows (e.g., rostering, grades).
8. Collaborate with security, data governance, and application teams to align on integration protocols.
9. Document technical architecture, data dictionaries, and user guides for internal and vendor teams.
10. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field required. Master’s preferred or equivalent combination of education and at least seven (7) years of relevant experience.
Minimum of 8 -10 years of experience in systems integration or technical architecture. K–12 student system experience strongly preferred.
Serves as the technical lead on cross-platform integration projects. May oversee junior engineers or vendors.
Designs and supports complex student data flows across critical platforms. Makes architectural and security-related decisions independently.
No direct budget authority, but advises on technology tools, licenses, and contracts supporting integrations.
Resolves complex issues related to data mismatches, sync failures, or policy misalignments. Designs systems that can adapt to frequent roster changes and real-time data needs.
Impacts educator access to instructional tools, LMS accuracy, and student experience across dozens of platforms. Errors may delay testing, instruction, or compliance reporting.
Regular interaction with academics, IT, security, and vendors. Prepares diagrams and system specifications for cross-team alignment.
Acts as a key enabler of instructional success by delivering clean, fast, and secure data to the systems used by teachers and students.
Office work environment. May require extended hours during integration launches, SIS transitions, or academic year rollovers, hybrid setting available.
