The role offers ample opportunity to leverage fundamentals of material science, engineering, and project execution to understand key transformations and successfully scale up innovative products and processes.
In this role, they will be responsible for research, design, and operation of test stands or other scale-up assets that enable knowledge development for transformations associated with unit operations in the filmmaking process. Additional duties include developing material processing capabilities, researching new process technologies, and implementation of process improvements extending to the manufacturing scale. The candidate will participate in cross-functional teams, collaborating closely with Engineering, R&D, and Production counterparts to facilitate knowledge transfer from lab to pilot lines to production.
This position is an excellent opportunity for a self-motivated, detail-oriented individual to perform activities critical to maintaining technical superiority while executing projects at the intersection of Engineering and R&D within an innovative material science company. This role is a hands-on position with a strong presence in the lab, scale up, and manufacturing environments. This position will report to the Associate Director of Project Engineering. It will require travel between Portage and LaPorte, Indiana manufacturing sites with occasional travel to Chicago.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support technical superiority initiatives through the implementation and continuing use of unit operation test stands and other scale-up assets to provide transformation-based learnings.
- Research and evaluate process technologies and instrumentation to aid in process development for test stands and the scale up process as a whole.
- Develop standard procedures and instructions for operation of new equipment.
- Develop process (PFS) and transformation flow sheets (TFS) critical to material processing.
- Utilize advanced data interpretation methods to evaluate new and existing processes to meet requirements.
- Analyze, evaluate, and develop intellectual property.
- Develop project-based risk assessments, including safety risks, in cross-functional collaboration.
- Collaborate locally and globally with fellow scientists, engineers, operations, sales, and marketing team members on development projects.
- Leverage external sources of innovation, including Kuraray’s R&D capabilities, to develop technologies for new processes.
- Requires a flexible work style and travel as necessary to perform assignments.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s or equivalent in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Polymer or Chemical or Material Engineering. Postgraduate degree a plus.
- 3+ Years of material processing and/or manufacturing process experience, with knowledge of polymer film and/or sheet manufacturing strongly preferred.
- Strong expertise in polymer film processing, mixing, casting, drying, winding, formation, stability, and associated phenomena. Additional experience in printing and coating is a plus.
- Preferred understanding of polymer fundamentals and material structure-property relationships and knowledge of polymer analytical/characterization techniques.
- Proficiency in data analysis and associated statistical tools such as Python, Minitab, JMP, or similar.
- Experience with planning and execution of capital/CapEx projects and associated project management expertise. PMP certification a plus but not required.
- Strong team-oriented professional with good interpersonal skills who is hands-on with a high energy approach to work, leveraging analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Six Sigma Black Belt or Green Belt certification a plus but not required.
- Must have excellent organizational skills and be capable of working independently with limited supervision.
- Ability to communicate ideas and information clearly, effectively, and frequently (oral and written) both to senior management and associates.

Compensation range - $75,487.71 - $120,711.84
