As an employee, you'll be part of a continually growing organization, working alongside exceptional colleagues and strategic partners worldwide, contributing to global health initiatives.

Moderna's commitment to advancing the technological frontier of mRNA medicines ensures a challenging and rewarding career experience, with the potential to make a significant impact on patients' lives worldwide.

Moderna is solidifying its presence within our international business services hub in Warsaw, Poland, a city renowned for its rich scientific and technological heritage. This hub provides critical functions, meeting the growing demand of Moderna’s global business operations. We're inviting professionals from around the world to join our mission and contribute to the future of mRNA medicines.

This is a compelling opportunity for a technically adept professional to play a critical role in designing, managing, and optimizing compute and storage infrastructure at a high-growth biotech innovator. As Senior Systems Engineer, you’ll take ownership of a complex, global VMware-based environment while overseeing enterprise storage, VM lifecycle management, patching, and disaster recovery. Operating as a key individual contributor, you will drive both engineering initiatives and operational excellence, ensuring the scalability, security, and reliability of Moderna’s infrastructure.

You will also work closely with cross-functional partners to support automation, hybrid cloud strategies, and platform evolution—with exposure to cutting-edge technology, including generative AI opportunities in automation and infrastructure intelligence.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Design, implement, and manage a resilient VMware virtualization environment, including ESXi, vCenter, and vSAN.
  • Oversee provisioning, optimization, and lifecycle management of virtual machines across hybrid cloud and on-premises infrastructure.
  • Administer enterprise storage systems such as Pure Storage or NetApp to meet evolving performance and replication requirements.
  • Implement and maintain robust backup and disaster recovery strategies using VEEAM Backup & Replication.
  • Drive infrastructure automation and orchestration using PowerShell, Python, or Ansible to increase operational efficiency and reliability.

Your responsibilities will also include:

  • Manage patching for VMs, hypervisors, and core services using tools like Ansible, SCCM, or WSUS.
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to remediate vulnerabilities and enforce compliance.
  • Serve as a Level 3 escalation point for complex incidents and participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation to support critical systems.
  • Conduct regular backup testing, failover drills, and storage capacity planning to ensure business continuity.
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation, SOPs, and operational runbooks for troubleshooting, upgrades, and DR procedures.

The key Moderna Mindsets you’ll need to succeed in the role:

  • “We behave like owners. The solutions we’re building go beyond any job description.”
  • You will take ownership of the global compute and storage infrastructure, solving high-impact challenges that directly affect operational uptime, scientific research, and commercial activities worldwide.
  • “We digitize everywhere possible using the power of code to maximize our impact on patients.”
  • This role offers meaningful engagement with automation, scripting, and systems integration—key pillars in enabling efficiency, agility, and AI-powered decision-making across Moderna’s infrastructure landscape.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications)

  • 8+ years of experience in compute, storage, virtualization, and backup administration.
  • Expertise in VMware environments, including vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, vSAN, and NSX.
  • Strong experience with enterprise storage solutions, such as Pure Storage, NetApp, Dell EMC, or similar.
  • Hands-on experience managing backup and disaster recovery solutions, specifically VEEAM Backup & Replication.
  • Proficiency in patch management processes and automation, using tools like WSUS, SCCM, Ansible, or equivalent.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with a deep understanding of compute, storage, and backup best practices.
  • Experience with observability and monitoring tools for compute and storage environments.

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Experience working in GxP-regulated environments is a plus. If no prior GxP experience, the candidate should be capable of quickly learning GxP compliance requirements for compute and storage systems.
  • Knowledge of hybrid cloud infrastructure, including AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud compute & storage solutions.
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Automation and scripting skills in PowerShell, Python, Ansible, or Terraform.
  • Experience implementing high availability (HA), disaster recovery (DR), and business continuity strategies.
  • Industry certifications such as VMware VCP, VCAP, VCDX, Pure Storage certification, or VEEAM Certified Engineer (VMCE) are a plus.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams, effectively communicate complex technical concepts, and drive infrastructure improvements.
