  • The Engine, Hybrid and Fuel Cell Powertrains group at Client is seeking a Sr. Project Engineer with specialization in engine and hybrid powertrain OBD system development. This Sr. Project Engineer position is an opportunity for the right candidate to experience state-of-the-art powertrain technology and get involved in a wide range of development tasks that move application solutions from concept to production.
  • As a Sr. Project Engineer specializing in the development of both conventional and hybrid powertrains, you will be responsible for leading the calibration and validation of on-board diagnostic (OBD) systems.
  • Additionally, you will be responsible for general engine and hybrid powertrain development work and testing as well as validation and certification activities performed on chassis and engine dynos as well as in-vehicle/machine in the application environment.
  • Working with highly motivated individuals from across the globe on a variety of engines, vehicles and markets, the Sr. Project Engineer will be able to increase their scope of experience with technology used across the globe. This Sr. Project Engineer position requires a highly motivated individual with an eagerness to learn and make a positive contribution.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the installation and commissioning of new powertrain test setups, including conventional combustion engine and hybrid configurations.
  • Identification and implementation of necessary connections, measurement points and instrumentation to support testing efforts.
  • Plan, coordinate and execute the testing of engines, aftertreatment systems, powertrain systems and OBD systems on engine/chassis dynamometer or in application.
  • Analysis of measured parameters and system performance relative to project targets.
  • Calibration and validation of electronic control unit parameters to satisfy program objectives.
  • Summarize findings and prepare presentations/reports for internal and customer review.
  • Manage customer hardware and project component inventory and logistics.
  • May involve work onsite at customer facilities, vehicle test trips to support ongoing development programs.

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience in engine, vehicle and/or powertrain testing
  • Extensive experience in calibration and implementation of OBD strategies meeting CARB regulations
  • Strong understanding of US OBD monitoring approaches
  • Strong regulatory understanding – CARB, EU-OBD, EPA-OBD, WWH-OBD
  • Strong understanding of fault handling and communication
  • Well versed in developing OBD design requirements for software development
  • Strong knowledge in the field of automotive sensors and actuators
  • Experience in calibrating inhibit matrix, fault identifiers, class definition, Mil handling, fault handling
  • Experience in setting up OBD specific data fetching via CAN through hand-shake messaging system
  • Experience in OBD data preparation for certification
  • Experience in OBD testing for certification, data consolidation and presentation preparation
  • Experience in logic diagram development and concept preparation
  • Strong fundamentals in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and internal combustion engines
  • Strong knowledge of SI and CI combustion processes
  • Strong knowledge of aftertreatment systems
  • Understanding of base engine, aftertreatment and/or hybrid electronic control system strategies, knowledge on software logic implementation and control system functionality
  • Experience using commercially available calibration and development tools (i.e., ETAS INCA, ATI Vision, Vector CAN ape/CANalyzer, Matlab/Simulink)
  • Professional communication skills (oral and written English)
  • Must be a motivated team player to perform in fast paced development environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of hybrid powertrain systems
  • Knowledge of control strategies employed on Bosch and/or GPEC controllers
  • Strong understanding of US emission regulations and certification test procedures for Gas, Diesel and/or Hybrid systems
  • Experience in calibration of base emissions control strategies to fulfill customer and regulatory requirements
  • Hands-on experience with engine hardware - engine assembly or rebuilding

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical/Automotive Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering or related field, Masters preferred
