General Summary
The Principal Electrical Engineer carries out major electrical engineering projects and programs using sound engineering practices. Designs a variety of large complex projects with a focus on electrical systems for water and wastewater projects.
Essential Functions
- Oversees and leads teams of professional engineers and other engineering and administrative personnel to conduct electrical engineering studies
- Designs a variety of large complex projects with a focus on electrical systems for water and wastewater projects
- Oversees and leads the preparation of contract documents for in-house designs; reviews consultants’ reports and designs; reviews contractors’ submittals
- Plans, organizes and oversees a wide range of multi-disciplinary, multi-faceted engineering activities
- Consults with various internal divisions and sections, manufacturers, suppliers, consultants and contractors
- Troubleshoots electrical faults and prepares reports on electrical design, construction, maintenance and operation issues and problems
- Oversees and leads the development and revision of design guidelines, equipment criteria, construction standards details and specifications dealing with electrical equipment and service
- Participates in the formulation of long-range facility plans and system improvement projects
- Leads and trains senior and junior-level electrical engineers
- Prepares electrical cost estimates for in-house engineering projects
- Participates in the general preparation of project budget estimates
- Attends necessary meetings and hearings and follows through on recommendation
- Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical engineering
- Ability to plan and oversee the work of professional engineers and other engineering and administrative personnel
- Ability to apply electrical engineering knowledge to solve technical problems
- Ability to prepare and effectively present highly technical and complex engineering reports and estimates both verbally and in writing
- Ability to use sound professional engineering judgment
Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- 6+ years electrical engineering experience
- 2+ years electrical engineering design experience
- 1+ years experience in planning and directing electrical engineering projects
Additional Requirements
- Possession of a valid driver’s license, with no more than 4 points, and the ability to obtain and maintain a WSSC Water driver’s permit within 90 days of hire or transfer
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Maryland. If candidate has PE license in another state, candidate must obtain Maryland registration within 12 months of hire or transfer
- Completion of the WSSC Water Financial Disclosure statement within 30 days of employment and annually thereafter
- Completion of all safety training as required by WSSC Water
Preferences
- 2+ years of electrical engineering experience with industrial type facilities, particularly water or wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
Salary $118,178 - $201,222
