Controls Engineer PM & A
The Opportunity:
We are seeking a motivated Controls Engineer with 2-5 years of experience to join our dynamic technical services team. The Controls Engineer will primarily install, troubleshoot, and repair complex beverage & associated equipment as well as at times, aid in design improvements, development, and implementation of control systems for the same equipment. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure systems meet performance, safety, and reliability standards. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, has a solid foundation in control systems, and is eager to grow their technical expertise.
How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:
- Design, program, and test programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and other control systems for automated equipment.
- Develop control system schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical).
- Troubleshoot and debug control systems during commissioning, startup, and ongoing operations.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to integrate control systems into larger automation projects.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., UL, NEC, ISA) and safety regulations.
- Support field installations, including system testing, calibration, and operator training.
- Document technical specifications, user manuals, and maintenance procedures.
- Assist in evaluating and selecting control system components and vendors.
- Participate in project planning, including scope definition, timeline estimation, and resource allocation.
- Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry trends to improve system performance.
- Release of PLC programs (AllenBradley, Siemens, Omron, Bosch), electrical schematics based on customer specifications in accordance with engineering standards.
- Know how to wire a machine according to the drawings as well as debug wiring.
- Work with senior engineers and manufacturing personnel.
- Reply to requested configurations and provide estimates to project management for proposals to customers.
- Identify and ensure best practices are shared and implemented.
- Support machine building process from assembly, debugging and acceptance testing, through potential on-site customer installations and start-up support internationally.
What you need to succeed:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field.
- 2-5 years of experience in controls engineering or a related role (more experience will be considered in lieu of a degree).
- Proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi) and HMI development (e.g., FactoryTalk, Wonderware).
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profibus).
- Experience with CAD software for electrical design (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN).
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot electrical and control systems.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to read a schematic
- Willingness to travel for field support (at times up to 70% travel, depending on business needs).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with robotics, motion control systems, or vision systems.
- Knowledge of programming languages such as Ladder Logic, Structured Text, or Python.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity practices for industrial control systems.
- Exposure to Lean or Six Sigma methodologies
