Job Description:

The Oregon Department of Agriculture Animal Health Program is currently recruiting for 2 Secure Food Supply Intern (Student Professional/Technical Worker) positions to help support the Animal Health Program. What you'll be doing:

  • As a Secure Food Supply Intern you will help Oregon livestock producers develop enhanced biosecurity plans in line with commodity-specific national guidelines (https://www.oregon.gov/oda/animal-health-feeds-livestock-id/secure-food-supply/Pages/commodity-specific-plans.aspx).
  • The Secure Food Supply Intern will travel the state, visit interested livestock operations and collaborate with producers and other supporting partners (e.g., industry organizations, university extension agents) to develop written enhanced biosecurity plans.
  • In addition, you will complete 10 plans (for 10 individual premises) this summer, primarily focusing on Oregon dairies and feedlots, although additional livestock operations interested may be identified.
  • Secure Food Supply Interns should expect to meet with each producer on their premises twice. Secure Food Supply Interns will drive to the pre-identified premises and work with the producer to draft an initial plan. ODA will fund mileage and any overnight lodging and per diem if deemed necessary during travel to the premises.
  • The Secure Food Supply Intern will provide producers with information and relevant resources to help implement their plans and enroll in the Oregon secure food supply program.
  • The completed enhanced biosecurity plans will be supplied in-person to the producer in hard copy and to ODA in electronic form for review and acceptance to register with the Oregon SFS Program. The hard copy plans will consist of a binder that includes the enhanced biosecurity plan and relevant SFS educational material to implement the plan.

Our Secure Food Supply Intern position is a limited duration full-time position, expected to end September 19, 2025, The candidate will be working throughout Oregon.

Working conditions

Work will primarily occur in a hybrid office environment. Frequent use of a computer and other office technology will be required. Occasional field work will be necessary in cooperation with program field staff to evaluate commercial farm operations and applicability of products developed. Fieldwork may involve limited exposure to poultry and livestock species, time spent outside in all weather conditions, and unsanitary conditions with a slight risk for transmission of zoonotic diseases.

What we’re looking for:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Must be a current college student or graduate of an Animal Science or Veterinary program.
  • A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
