Job Description

The Protection and Control Engineer will perform protective relay studies and schemes to troubleshoot, update relay settings, and develop new configurations for power utilities, renewable power generation plants, and industrial clients. The role supports projects involving high voltage relay settings ranging from 115kv to 345KV systems, including substation, transmission, distribution, power generation, and renewable facilities. Additionally, the engineer will create protection and control drawings and schematics, working with software such as ASPEN OneLiner, CAPE, MathCAD, Excel, SKM, and EasyPower.

Responsibilities

  • Perform protective relay studies and schemes to troubleshoot and update relay settings.
  • Develop and configure new relay settings for power utilities, renewable power generation plants, and industrial clients.
  • Support projects involving high voltage relay settings from 115kv to 345KV systems.
  • Create protection and control drawings and schematics.
  • Utilize software including ASPEN OneLiner, CAPE, MathCAD, Excel, SKM, and EasyPower.
  • Engage in project engineering responsibilities, including client interaction and subcontractor management.
  • Mentor and collaborate with junior engineers and internal departments.
  • Support projects with varying durations, from multiple weeks to multiple years, throughout the country.

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years of experience in protection and controls engineering related to 115kv-345kv utility systems.
  • Direct experience with electrical studies and protective relay settings.
  • Proficiency in short circuit and symmetrical component analysis.
  • Understanding of time current coordination and protection scheme development.
  • Experience in relay settings, logic development, and integration with SCADA systems.
  • Compliance knowledge with NERC standards.
  • Arc flash analysis expertise.
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering.
  • Proficiency with MathCAD and Excel.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering may reduce years of experience requirement.
  • Experience with ASPEN and CAPE software preferred.
  • Professional Engineering license preferred.
  • Experience with AcSELerator Quickset (SEL-5030), SKM-PTW, EasyPower, ETAP, RSCAD/RTDS.
  • Experience in SCADA systems beneficial.
  • Client-focused engineering project experience preferred.

Work Environment

The office environment is casual, offering hybrid and remote schedules based on experience. The team consists of around a dozen members within a large engineering firm with over 4000 employees across North America. The Portland office houses 50 to 100 employees, with a Monday to Friday work schedule. The company offers direct placement, 401k, PTO, health benefits, and competitive compensation. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $160000.00/yr.
