Assistant Controller

Location: Midtown Manhattan, onsite

Salary: $150k-180k base plus bonus

A dynamic and growing full-service international real estate company is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join their finance team. You will play a vital role in supporting the Controller and Chief Accounting Officer in the efficient management of the company's day-to-day financial operations across a substantial portfolio of over 400 properties and investment entities.

Responsibilities:

  • General Accounting & Financial Reporting:
  • Prepare, review, and approve journal entries with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ensure proper coding and classification of all financial expenses.
  • Perform ad-hoc account analysis and balance sheet reviews.
  • Reconcile monthly payroll clearing accounts.

Transaction & Treasury Management:

Manage the recording of financing transactions.

Support treasury management functions, including cash flow forecasting and fund transfers.

Reconcile and manage intercompany balances.

Monitor internal loans for repayment schedules.

Maintain detailed schedules of foreign currency activities for GL and banking reporting.

Maintain a schedule of letters of credit, tracking expirations and ensuring timely renewals.

Mortgage & Distribution Oversight:

Review and oversee mortgage obligations, including expirations, trigger dates, and required payments.

Review new mortgage setups and record initial closings.

Review and approve financial distributions.

Compliance & Process Improvement:

Ensure compliance with internal controls, policies, and external regulations.

Collaborate with external auditors, tax advisors, and other stakeholders.

Identify and implement improvements to processes and controls for enhanced efficiency and accuracy.

Assist in clearing bank reconciliation issues and determining root causes for procedural enhancements.

GL & System Administration:

Participate in GL/MRI setup and maintenance, coordinating the setup of new properties, GL accounts, banking configurations, and report design.

Serve as a backup check signer.

Tax & Legal Coordination:

Monitor annual NYC tax assessments, working with certiorari attorneys to address significant increases.

Review certiorari offers for acceptance or rejection.

Manage detailed GL activities for foreign entities and complete year-end write-ups for Canadian Auditors. Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Proven experience in the real estate industry and management.
  • Demonstrated experience as a Senior Accountant or Assistant Controller.
  • Strong understanding of financial concepts, real estate transactions, and accrual accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and familiarity with accounting software (e.g., MRI, Sage, Kyriba, Avid, Concur).
  • Excellent analytical skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Familiarity with the real estate transaction cycle and property taxes.
  • A proactive approach with a strong initiative to identify and implement improvements.
  • High level of critical thinking and creative problem-solving abilities.
