Assistant Controller

Location: NYC based

Compensation: $160-189k base plus bonus

A leading international real estate company is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Assistant Controller to join our team. This role will support the Controller and Chief Accounting Officer in managing the daily financial operations for a portfolio of 400 properties and investment entities.

Responsibilities:

  • General Accounting & Financial Reporting:
    • Record, review, and approve journal entries, ensuring proper expense coding.
    • Manage GL/MRI setup and maintenance for new properties and accounts.
    • Reconcile intercompany balances and monthly payroll clearing accounts.
    • Perform ad-hoc account analysis and balance sheet reviews.
  • Transaction & Treasury Management:
    • Record and manage financing transactions, including mortgages and foreign currency.
    • Support treasury functions, including cash flow forecasting and fund transfers.
    • Review and approve distributions and monitor internal loans.
    • Review and oversee mortgage obligations, including new mortgage setups.
    • Maintain detailed schedules of foreign currency activities and letters of credit.
    • Manage Bank reconciliations, and resolve issues.
  • Compliance & Reporting:
    • Ensure compliance with internal controls, policies, and external regulations.
    • Collaborate with auditors, tax advisors, and external stakeholders.
    • Monitor annual NYC tax assessments and work with certiorari attorneys.
    • Manage detailed GL activities for foreign entities and complete year-end write-ups.
  • Process Improvement:
    • Identify and implement process and control improvements.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Proven experience as a Senior Accountant, Assistant Controller
  • Mandatory: Experience in the real estate industry and management.
  • Strong understanding of financial concepts, real estate transactions, and accrual accounting.
  • Proficiency in Excel and accounting software (MRI, Sage, Kyriba, Avid, Concur preferred).
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses, and can participate in medical, dental, and vision benefits as well as the company’s 401(k) retirement plan.
