Job Description

At the University of Oklahoma, the Billing Accountant is primarily responsible for providing professional accounts receivable services for various auxiliary and service units within the University. This includes receiving and validating billing files received from departments, loading files into the billing database, as well as sending out invoices and monitoring outstanding accounts receivable balances. Strong accounting knowledge, ability to pivot and juggle multiple tasks, excellent communication skills, and top-tier customer service are expected in this role. Additionally, we are looking for individuals who are organized, flexible, and professional.

General accounting duties may include:

  • Reconciles accounts.
  • Produces statements of financial activity based upon monthly departmental business.
  • Monitors departmental accounts, accounts payable transactions, spending activity, etc. Prepares cost and budget transfers.
  • Initiates cost transfers between various departments and service units.
  • Maintains department's financial records, budget information, and other forms of data. Tracks payments, receipts, transactions, internal and external contracts, agreements, etc.
  • Prepares financial reports to document activity, substantiate transactions, report findings, etc.
  • Provides assistance to departments across campus, principal investigators, vendors, and other staff in analyzing and maintaining appropriate funds for salaries, expenditures, etc.
  • Performs financial analyses for report preparation, to improve departmental accounting procedures, at the request of department head, etc. Analyzes terms of contracts to ensure compliance.
  • Ensures the quality of data. Research inconsistencies and conducts follow-up investigations or consults with appropriate personnel.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Primary duties and responsibilities specific to this position:

  • Maintaining the billing database
  • Ensuring the proper recording and documentation of financial transactions
  • Generating invoices and account statements
  • Performing account reconciliations
  • Maintaining accounts receivable files and records
  • Producing monthly financial and management reports
  • Investigating and resolving any irregularities or inquiries
  • Assisting in general financial management and analysis
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

Job Requirements

Required Education: Bachelor's of Science or Bachelor's of Arts Degree AND a minimum of 18 hours of accounting coursework.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of Accounting principles, practices, methods, and terminology
  • Computer skills in MS Office, accounting software and databases
  • Ability to choose the right mathematical method or formula to solve a problem
  • Ability to collect and organize accounting data, interpret the significance, and prepare accurate financial reports
  • Ability to solve accounting and related financial problems
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to handle stressful situations
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, project management and communication skills

Departmental Preferences:

  • 12 months professional accounting experience
  • Experience with billing software and accounts receivable management
  • Experience with Excel, as well as database experience

  • None
