About the College/Unit/Department

As the 4th largest public college of education in the country and the 3rd largest college at UGA, the Mary Frances Early College of Education (MFE COE) improves the lives of residents of Georgia and beyond through our instruction, research, and service. The MFE COE is a comprehensive college with disciplines focused on teacher preparation, counseling and human development, communication sciences, human movement sciences, career development, student affairs, and educational administration and policy. We place significant emphasis on graduate education with approximately 40% of our students at the graduate level, making us the second largest college at UGA with respect to graduate education.

Named for Mary Frances Early, UGA’s first African American graduate, in February 2020, the MFE COE has a long and distinguished history as a leader in diversity, equity, and inclusion. The post-doc associate will work in a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative environment, interacting closely with scientists, engineers, study coordinators, students, and research participants across four centers of the project, University of Georgia, Carnegie Mellon University, Emory University, and Johns Hopkins University, to work on the multi-modal project.

Research activities: Leading and conducting experimental and protocol design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Leading manuscript preparation and submission.

Minimum Qualifications

Position Summary

The postdoctoral research associate will work on an NIH-funded project dissecting and modelling the behavior and neurophysiology of human hand dexterity before and after stroke. The work involves using advanced force and motion-sensing devices to record human hand behaviors and apply neural tractography and brain stimulation techniques to delineate descending pathways, and computational modelling approaches to examine neural mechanisms supporting essential components of hand dexterity.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position

Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Neurophysiology, Cognitive Psychology, or related areas

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Desired qualities include high motivation in scientific discoveries, strong work ethics and collegiality, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Prior training and experience in human movement sciences, including biomechanics, neuroimaging and neurophysiology are preferred.
