The Sr. ESD Design Engineer will be a member of the Centralized Electrical Engineering (CEE) team with responsibilities for the design and validation of the analog, digital, and embedded sub-systems for Amazon Devices. This will require close cooperation with the x-functional teams including EE, Mechanical, ID, Reliability and factory teams. You will work at the integrated circuit and product systems level and drive the quality bar for the to ensure the products we ship are bug free. In this role, you will:

Key job responsibilities

• Engagement with IC and TVS diode vendors to acquire data and models for ESD design
• Perform in-depth component level and system level design reviews of ECAD and MCAD design to de-risk ESD design elements
• Run ESD simulations (MCAD and ECAD simulations) on experimental and product circuits to ensure robustness and develop design guidance
• Maintain the component qualification status for ESD protection devices used in consumer products
• Analyze the ESD REL test results and provide Risk assessment and design rules to aid internal and external design teams
• Perform debug and failure analysis with RCA and CA
• Cost down analysis including TVS diodes, capacitor, copper tapes, conductive foams, shielding reductions etc.
• Engage and manage ESD deliverables from partners like contract manufacturers and engineering service providers.
• Travel to EMS partner labs to support REL and validation activities (estimated 10%)

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with 7+ years of overall experience focused on ESD design
• Experience in failure analysis of hard and soft ESD failures and troubleshooting skills in a laboratory environment
• Proficiency in ESD device modeling, system-level ESD simulation (SEED), ESD gun air and contact discharge testing, TLP measurement, and EFT/surge testing
• Automation of hardware testing and simulation workflows using Python, MATLAB, VB scripts, and GUI tools to drive efficiency
• Proficiency in software design tools such as CST, Cadence, EMA3D, ADS, and Creo
• Strong understanding of semiconductor device physics and on-chip ESD device characterization/modeling
• Familiarity with international ESD standards (IEC-61000-4-2, IEC-61000-4-4, IEC 61000-4-5) and test methods
• Hands-on experience designing and characterizing ESD protection circuits for key consumer electronics interfaces like HDMI, USB-C, I2C, I2S, WiFi, Bluetooth, and MEMS microphones

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Masters or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or related discipline
• Experience with wearable technologies, battery powered, wireless, embedded HW/SW consumer devices

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $128,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $213,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
