Job Summary
The Facility Engineer (WWTP) is responsible for managing the operation, maintenance, and optimization of the plant’s wastewater treatment system, which includes physical, chemical, and biological treatment processes. This role ensures regulatory compliance, system efficiency, and environmental safety while supervising plant personnel, laboratory activities, and consumables management.
Key Responsibilities
1. Wastewater Treatment Operations & Compliance
- Oversee and monitor wastewater treatment processes to ensure compliance with Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations 2009.
- Manage physical, chemical, and biological treatment processes, including screening, sedimentation, Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF), chemical dosing, aeration, and activated sludge systems.
- Conduct water sampling and analysis to assess treatment performance and discharge compliance.
- Maintain accurate records of effluent discharge and prepare regulatory reports.
- Serve as the plant’s CePIETSO Competent Person, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
2. System Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Plan and oversee preventive maintenance (PM) for WWTP equipment.
- Identify and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and process-related issues.
- Ensure the optimal functioning of equipment, including mixers, aerators, blowers, pumps, clarifiers, chemical dosing units, and sludge handling systems.
- Maintain adequate spare parts and coordinate equipment servicing and upgrades.
3. Manpower Management
- Supervise WWTP Technicians and Associates, ensuring efficient task allocation and shift coverage.
- Train and mentor team members on operational procedures, environmental compliance, and safety protocols.
- Conduct performance evaluations and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
4. Laboratory & Consumables Management
- Oversee wastewater laboratory operations, ensuring accurate testing of key parameters (COD, BOD, TSS, pH, Oil & Grease, etc.).
- Manage chemical inventory and ensure proper procurement of cost-effective, high-quality consumables.
- Ensure laboratory equipment is properly maintained and calibrated.
5. Process Improvement & Optimization
- Analyze wastewater treatment performance data to identify improvement opportunities.
- Optimize treatment processes for efficiency, cost reduction, and sustainability.
- Implement energy-efficient practices and upgrade outdated equipment.
6. Safety & Environmental Management
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of treatment chemicals per environmental and safety regulations.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement corrective actions.
- Provide safety training and ensure compliance with all regulatory guidelines.
7. Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare and submit monthly and annual environmental reports to regulatory bodies (e.g., Department of Environment (DOE) Malaysia).
- Maintain records of effluent discharge, chemical usage, laboratory test results, and plant operations.
- Ensure all documentation is audit-ready and compliant with internal and external inspections.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Certified Environmental Professional in Industrial Effluent Treatment System – Operation (CePIETSO) is mandatory.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in wastewater treatment operations, preferably in the food manufacturing industry.
