What to Expect
Tesla is looking for a Power Systems Engineer to enhance our in-house modeling and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing capabilities for our Battery Energy Storage Systems. You will collaborate with utilities, developers, and system operators in technical discussions on power systems, influencing system designs to support grid scaling. Your role involves developing detailed models of Tesla's technology and control strategies as they operate on the grid. This dynamic and fast-paced position covers various aspects of electrical, control, firmware design, and grid operations.
What You’ll Do
- Serve as the technical representative in discussions with customers, demonstrating your ability to explain power systems analysis results and Tesla’s technology integration with the grid
- Work with TSOs and DSOs to develop common interpretation of requirements, verification processes and acceptance criteria for battery projects
- Ensure Tesla’s system is properly validated for the project application and expected behavior is demonstrated in acceptance testing
- Enhance our internal capabilities by modeling Tesla’s products within power systems analysis software, including applications for microgrids and larger grid integrations
- Collaborate with the product design and firmware/software teams to maintain models that align with the technology roadmap
- Work with the product design team to incorporate power system requirements into product specifications, shaping the system architecture
- Provide thought leadership in regional regulatory discussions, and define policy positions supporting Tesla's mission in coordination with internal and external stakeholders
- Partner with customers and the business development team to create models representing the Tesla Energy system in power flow and dynamic modeling software
What You’ll Bring
- Expertise in power system modeling tools: PSCAD, PSS\E, PSLF, DIgSILENT, PowerWorld
- Experience in modeling and simulating inverter-based generation
- Proficiency in conducting interconnection and engineering studies, including stability, protection coordination, harmonics, insulation coordination, arc flash, and ground grid analysis
- Strong knowledge of control theory and ability to implement PID control
- Ability to work collaboratively across functions with customers, engineering, business development, and deployment teams
- Familiarity with HIL tools (RTDS, Typhoon, OPAL-RT) is a plus
- A degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems or equivalent experience
