About the Role:
The Advanced Materials and Process Group is excited to announce an opportunity for a Composites R&D Engineer to join our team. This role will focus on advancing cutting-edge materials research, innovative manufacturing processes, and next-generation sustainable products for our Interiors business unit.
As a key contributor to our technology development programs, you will leverage your expertise in advanced materials design methods & simulation, testing, characterization and manufacturing processes in a dynamic research environment. You will have the unique opportunity to drive sustainability initiatives through life cycle assessments and contribute to our technology roadmaps and strategy. Additionally, you’ll collaborate on proposals, roadmaps, and processes to deliver impactful, market-leading solutions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Materials Research & Development: Analyze, research, and develop advanced materials and related manufacturing processes for next-generation lightweight structures such as fiber reinforced polymer/plastic composites (FRPCs), systems, and sustainable products.
- Project Management: Develop and manage project plans, including material processing, testing, design simulation, optimization, data collection, and reporting.
- Lab & Partner Collaboration: Coordinate and execute advanced material and manufacturing process development projects within company labs and with external research partners.
- Problem-Solving: Apply creativity and engineering expertise to identify and implement practical solutions to complex challenges.
- Technology Planning: Contribute to technology roadmaps and proposals, supporting future R&D needs for advanced materials and processes.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal teams (US, EU, and Asia), research institutions, and supply chain partners to develop sustainable solutions and full life cycle assessment methods.
Basic Qualifications & Experience:
- Education: B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Polymer Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience/Knowledge: Design, and/or manufacturing of fiber reinforced polymer/plastic composites
- Skills: Strong project management, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Communication: Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills, including technical writing. Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Eagerness to Learn: Enthusiasm for hands-on learning and applying new technologies and production techniques for polymers, plastics, and fiber-reinforced composites (thermoset and/or thermoplastic).
Preferred Qualifications & Experience:
- Education: Advanced degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Polymer Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience/Knowledge:
- Experimental and theoretical knowledge of polymers and FRPCs.
- Advanced manufacturing processes, including process development, digital engineering for FRPCs, and automated/robotic manufacturing.
- Materials and structural analysis, especially for lightweight composite structures and FRPCs.
- Technical Skills:
- Experience with FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus, or HyperMesh).
- Proficiency in manufacturing processing, characterization, testing, and modelling for materials in general and FRPCs in particular.
