Job Summary

The Sustainable Labs Intern will be responsible for helping develop internal sustainable lab programs for Indiana University laboratories. This intern will work closely with lab managers, faculty, operations staff, and EHS to create guidelines for more sustainable lab practices and research new ways to reduce the environmental impact of laboratories. This intern will gain hands-on experience in project management, program development, collaboration, communication, and more.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Becomes familiarized with sustainable labs principles and fundamentals.
  • Using best practices from other universities and institutions regarding sustainable lab initiatives, develop an IU-specific sustainable labs program.
  • Identifies existing sustainability standards, methodologies, assessments, and other like tools (e.g., energy consumption, green chemicals).
  • Researches, analyzes, and supports STARS sustainable labs categories.
  • Identifies opportunities to achieve reductions in energy use, water use, and waste generated in labs.
  • Assists with developing an internal sustainable lab checklist.
  • Assists with developing and advancing initiatives such as Green Labs Certification, International Laboratory Freezer Challenge, chemical fume hood safety, and more.
  • Assists with the metric development and data collection.
  • Assists with assessing and certifying labs through internal sustainable lab criteria.
  • Develops training materials, web resources, and other educational materials.
  • Succinctly writes reports of findings.
  • Assists with other sustainability programs and events, as needed.
  • Advertises campus sustainability projects that enhance and highlight sustainable lab management practices and events.
  • Assists with other sustainability programs and initiatives.
  • Collaborates with sustainability and waste focused student organizations.
  • Seeks additional funding or grant sources in support of campus / university-wide sustainability and position related initiatives.
  • Higher ed / sustainability focused professional development and training opportunities.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University 
  • Must maintain student status for the duration of the internship
  • Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater

SKILLS

Required

  • Reliable and possess strong organizational skills
  • Strong desire and ability to learn

Preferred

  • Familiarity in principles of sustainability and sustainable laboratories
  • Experience with MS Office applications, specifically Excel, Access, and Word
  • Strong writing and communication skills

Working Conditions / Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The employee is occasionally move about the campus and workspace. The employee must occasionally move items up to 30 pounds. A person in the role must be able to detect items both close up and far away.

At times, workload requires being in lab spaces, outdoors, or in high traffic indoor / outdoor campus spaces. The noise level in the work environment is moderate.

Laptop / computer use (e.g. Microsoft Office and email) and cellphones are required. Occasional use of printers/copiers, university data and communication software, and office provided supplies.

Work Location

Bloomington, Indiana

This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between 4 remote workdays and 1 in-person workday), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs. 

This student employee will be expected to work at least 1 day in the office for mentor and bi-weekly full team meetings.

Advertised Salary

$13 for undergraduate students; $15 for graduate students
