The energy industry is undergoing rapid and dramatic changes, transforming the utility landscape to enhance safety, reliability and sustainability. In response, Jacobs is expanding its Energy & Power Solutions team to tackle the complexities of decarbonization and utility modernization to deliver a cleaner and more secure energy future. We have multiple positions available for electrical engineers seeking to apply and develop their skills working closely with our utility clients and operations teams as we expand our energy transition portfolio. 

These openings provide the opportunity to engage with our clients to modernize, expand or harden their utility transmission and distributions systems in North America. Demonstrated abilities include a broad understanding of electrical engineering sciences as well as materials and construction practices. Prior experience in the design of utility transmission and distribution systems will be highly regarded. 

Your primary responsibilities will focus upon providing his position will partner with a multi-discipline team to develop designs of electrical substations to support the safe and reliable delivery of electricity across the United States and Canada. Opportunities may include, but not limited to:

  • Addressing complex challenges faced by major utilities in North America through innovation
  • Development of substation physical design including yard layout plans, sections and details; grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of material.
  • Developing substation protection and control designs through the development of drawings including panel arrangements/layouts, one lines/single lines, three lines, AC schematics, DC schematics, equipment wiring and relay panel wiring.
  • Performing or overseeing quality review for all aspects of substation design
  • Development of substation related project proposals including development of estimates of resources necessary to delivery high quality designs to clients
  • Development of equipment specifications and design criteria
  • Providing engineering support for clients through the construction phase to commissioning
  • Performing field visits and walk-downs and validating necessary compliance documentation.
  • Technical lead for single- or multi-discipline professionals to ensure project success.
  • Presenting proposals and design deliverables to clients, permitting authorities, public interest groups, etc.
  • May serve as the initial primary point of contact for clients, ensuring high levels of satisfaction while addressing issues or concerns promptly.
  • Facilitates client, subcontractor, or vendor meetings and conducts client presentations to showcase services and capabilities.
  • Advocates on client's behalf by actively engaging the firm to address client needs, and recommend strategic actions to optimize business development
  • Works with a cross functional team to both support the sales and proposal preparation process for new contracts and the committed high-quality delivery of those services to the client.
  • Participate in industry conferences, seminars, trade shows, and networking events to promote company services and stay updated on industry innovations and advancements.

Here's what you'll need

  • Bachelor's or Advanced Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering or related engineering discipline
  • At least 10 years of experience in design or consulting for the utility industry
  • Demonstrated familiarity and ability develop and perform QA/QC of design calculations, construction drawings, and specifications for substation designs
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills 

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Professional Engineer License or the ability to obtain a license within one year
  • High voltage (greater than 100 kilovolt) substation planning and design experience
  • Familiarity and experience with CADD platforms such as Autodesk or Bentley products
  • Familiarity and experience with substation or collection stations which integrate renewable energy projects including wind, solar, hydro, geothermal and other technologies to the Transmission or Distribution grid
  • Bulk Power distribution Substation and/or Smart Grid designs for integration of distributed energy resources (DER) including Energy storage systems (ESS)
  • Familiarity and/or experience with relay and protection, SCADA controls, and/or power system automation

The base salary range for this position is $116,400.00 to $152,700.00. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
