Position Overview:
The SSRL at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Research Intern with experience in Biology or Chemistry to join as a member of our SSRL Macromolecular Crystallography Operations group. The intern will work on small parts design, procurement, parts fabrication, assembly, and installation work to support the new laboratory automation and the completion of new experimental instrumentation. Projects will include the design of specialized sample holders, support structures and precision positioning systems for samples and scientific instrumentation for use at synchrotron beam lines. Work may also include aiding in the operation, testing and maintenance of automated laboratory equipment. Documentation and organization of drawings, parts lists, and assembly instruction, writing QA/QC testing procedures, and the production of web-based manufacturing directions may also be required.
Your specific responsibilities include:
- Basic mechanical design and assembly
- Familiarize with laboratory protocols and instruments for protein crystallization
- Learning how to operate and program fluid handling systems
- Setting up crystallization trials and running laboratory protocols
- Developing documentation including parts lists, assembly instructions, drawings, etc.

Note: This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible temporary-nonexempt student position (work at 50% full-time equivalent or more), not to exceed 980 hours in six consecutive months Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated, and have US work authorization
To be successful in this position you will bring:
- Undergraduate level training in biology, mathematics or chemistry
- Experience working in a wet lab and basic laboratory skills
- Experience in maintenance or mechanical work in an industrial setting, in laboratory automation or in automotive repair is helpful
- Basic computer skills including MS Office.
- Be able to adapt to applicable site environmental and safety rules and guidance and meet training requirements.
- Able to effectively communicate technical issues with senior engineers, operators, tech support personnel and others in a diverse multicultural environment.

The expected pay range for this position is $24.20 - $26.19 per hour. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
