What to Expect
Tesla’s Plastics Manufacturing Engineering team is a diverse, high performing group of engineers that define and execute Tesla’s manufacturing processes for plastic components. As a part of this team, you will be tasked with assessing the current manufacturing capabilities of Tesla plastics processes, developing a manufacturing and capacity strategy for plastic components for current and future product programs, determining the most effective methods to manufacture plastic components, and implementing equipment capacity and capability upgrades.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the development of new plastic injection tooling projects to meet product performance and cosmetic requirements
- Bring the voice of manufacturing into design by performing advanced DFMs, evaluating part feasibility, and providing solutions to meet engineering and manufacturing needs
- Design and model all aspects of injection molds, including mold layout, parting lines, actions, and mechanisms
- Apply knowledge of plastic resins, molding characteristics, tool steels, and alloy materials used in injection mold manufacturing
- Develop CAPEX plans, issue RFQs for prototype/production tooling, and manage technical solutions with engineering sub-contractors for process design and tooling construction
- Drive innovation to enable unique product development for each program and collaborate with design and vehicle quality teams to establish part appearance standards
- Commission tooling and support factory launch processes while ensuring scalability of molding processes
- Use data-driven methods to optimize molding processes to meet quality and production requirements
- Support engineering builds, verify molding process scalability, and resolve production challenges
- Lead technical solutions for process design and manage the layout and construction of new plastics tooling
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
- 5-7+ years of hands-on experience with world-class Automotive Class A large/medium injection plastic molds design and processing
- Proficient in Tool design and experienced with 3D Modeling in Catia V5/Cimatron/NX
- Detailed understanding of plastics molding process and post molding operations
- Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturing, Desing for Assembly and GD & T
- Strong interpersonal skills when working with internal groups and outside vendors
- Ability to work with multi-functional team in a rapidly changing environment with minimal guidance
- Willingness to travel domestically or internationally (Up to 40% per year)
- Understanding and interpreting mold filling simulations and cooling analyses
- Proficient in basic and field related software (i.e., CATIA/SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Mold flow simulations)
