Job Description

In this role as an Engineer Specialist, you will be key in design and analysis of mechanical systems and structures, ensuring they meet high standards for performance, safety, and reliability. Your expertise will help us come up with practical solutions, tackle complex engineering challenges, and contribute to the success of projects of all sizes, from large to small. You will work on a variety of projects that push the limits of mechanical engineering, focusing on mechanical design, structural and thermal integrity and optimization using Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

Job Description:

In this role, you will lead your own projects from start to finish, designing, analyzing, and improving mechanical systems and structures. Using your skills in finite element analysis (FEA), thermal analysis, solid mechanics, and stress analysis, you will create reliable, high-quality solutions. You will also support a variety of engineering needs, including work on Production Irradiator (PI) products.

Collaboration is key, and you will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, project managers, and other engineers to ensure project success. This means making sure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet both customer and company expectations. You will be the go-to person for ensuring that designs meet Nordion’s high engineering standards.

In addition to leading your own projects, you will also contribute to larger, more complex projects, helping to keep everything on track. You will be involved in validating and refining components and systems, ensuring they perform at their best and meet the highest quality standards.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Strong background in mechanical design and analysis, with a solid understanding of industry standards. Skilled in designing mechanical systems, optimizing components, and ensuring designs are cost-effective and efficient through manufacturability (DFM) principles.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical stress and strength calculations, with the ability to apply these principles to ensure the safety and reliability of designs.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience with structural and thermal FEA analysis, optimizing designs for strength, stability, and thermal performance.
  • Proven experience leading design projects, from brainstorming and prototyping to testing and final implementation of mechanical and electromechanical systems.
  • Experience technically managing multiple projects from start to finish, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality and safety standards.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex technical ideas in simple terms to both technical and non-technical audiences, making sure everyone is on the same page.
  • Hands-on experience with testing protocols, analyzing results, and creating detailed reports to guide decisions and improvements.
  • Ability to work well with cross-functional teams, collaborating with project management and production teams to ensure projects stay on track and are successfully completed.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, offering creative solutions and technical advice to overcome design challenges.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and technicians, helping them grow and develop into strong team members.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, with a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license or eligibility for accreditation.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement, staying updated with technological advancements and integrating them into engineering processes to drive innovation.

Other Assets

  • Experience with electromechanical systems or multi-disciplinary design, particularly in integrating mechanical and electrical components.
  • Experience with Ansys for advanced FEA techniques.
  • Experience with SolidWorks.
  • Experience working in a highly regulated industry (Nuclear is preferred).
  • Experience with welding design, specs, and qualification.
  • Basic understanding of radiation shielding design and analysis.

Requirements and Additional Information:

  • Occasional overtime to meet project requirements.
  • Occasional travel requirements (up to 30 days/year, including international travel).
  • Successfully complete all required training and certification as a Nuclear Energy Worker
