The UCL Doctoral School & Early Career Research Staff, RIGE (“Doctoral School”) aims to ensure that UCL continues to be at the forefront of doctoral training, and that UCL continues to offer the finest environment for personal and academic development of its doctoral and post-doctoral researchers. The Doctoral School focuses on policy and strategy for doctoral education and development of early career research staff, working with academic faculties on their strategies, and monitoring their implementation and performance. It is responsible for developing a vision for the UCL doctoral and post-doctoral experience, and defining the most appropriate model for training.

About the role

We are recruiting a Doctoral Training Entity Manager who will be responsible for the management and successful delivery of UCL’s institutionally held EPSRC Doctoral Training awards (currently comprising DTP / Doctoral Landscape Award and ICASE) in conjunction with the Chair of the DTP Governance Board.

The successful candidate will act as a first point of contact for the DTP, managing the recruitment process, budgeting and allocation of funds, as well as all activity related to the DTP. They will provide key strategic input into the delivery and renewal of the training grant and will lead in achieving a high quality and timely service to current and prospective students and staff, both centrally and across all departments hosting EPSRC students. This will include ensuring effective procedures are documented and adopted for dealing with enquiries, applications, admissions, and progression, as well as doctoral training aspects. Additionally, the postholder will have responsibility for managing a broad group of external stakeholders in industry, including engagement, oversight of the contracting process.

Some responsibilities include Grant-level budget management and planning, including forecasting (circa £40 million), day-to-day oversight and management of the operations of the programme including detailed financial management and reporting on the different aspects of the programme for internal and external review. The successful candidate will also manage the Governance Board, including servicing meetings, data analysis, drafting discussion papers, and advising on financial decisions. They'll managing and co-ordinate recruitment to the various schemes, creation and implement a training programme, manage the EPSRC Industrial Case grants, and produce reports as needed.

About you

To be successful in this role you will need to have in-depth knowledge of and experience in application of UKRI Training Grant Terms and Conditions and a strong understanding of the requirements for meeting UKRI funder assurance standards. You will also need to have experience of doctoral researcher administration, significant experience of managing budgets and reconciling payments, and experience of creating and/or updating workflows, including communicating the processes involved to others.

You'll need to be efficient, organised and have strong attention to detail, and you'll need to be proactive and independent in seeking solutions and efficient working processes. Additionally, the role requires interaction with many people within and external to UCL thus a professional attitude, willingness to help and a positive outlook are required to execute the duties outlined.
