Overview

The Manufacturing Supervisor is responsible for overseeing production operations during both the second and third shifts. They ensure that production targets, safety standards, and quality expectations are met across both shifts. This supervisor works closely with shift leads to resolve issues, maintain communication between shifts, and ensure smooth transitions between the second, third, and first shifts.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Coordination: 

  • Supervise and support both the second and third shift operations. 
  • Oversee and provide direction to the shift leads, ensuring they understand their roles and responsibilities. 
  • Serve as the point of contact for both shifts, troubleshooting problems, making decisions, and ensuring alignment with overall production goals. 
  • Ensure proper shift transitions and information flow between the second, third, and first shifts by coordinating with the respective shift leads. 
  • Shift Oversight and Production Management: 
  • Ensure production targets are achieved for both shifts and that schedules are adhered to. 
  • Monitor production performance and adjust processes to stay on schedule. 
  • Work with shift leads to ensure efficient coordination of resources, materials, and manpower across both shifts. 
  • Address any production delays or inefficiencies, escalating issues to the Plant Manager if necessary. 
  • Safety and Compliance: 
  • Ensure that all safety protocols are being followed on both shifts, and that proper PPE is used. 
  • Conduct safety audits and inspections for both shifts to ensure compliance with OSHA standards and internal safety policies. 
  • Investigate any safety incidents, near misses, or unsafe conditions that arise, and implement corrective actions. 
  • Promote a culture of safety awareness, working with shift leads to ensure employees follow all safety regulations. 

Quality Control: 

  • Ensure that quality control standards are being met throughout both shifts. 
  • Work with the shift leads to ensure that products are being inspected according to quality standards before being approved for shipping or further processing. 
  • Address any quality deviations or issues, ensuring corrective actions are implemented in real-time. 
  • Communicate with the Quality Director and Lab Operation Manager to address any product defects, ensuring timely resolutions and documentation. 

Inventory Accuracy: 

  • Ensure accurate inventory counts for materials and finished goods during both shifts. 
  • Monitor the use and movement of raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods to ensure accurate tracking in the inventory management system. 
  • Work with the shift leads to perform regular cycle counts and inventory audits to verify the accuracy of the inventory. 
  • Investigate and address any discrepancies between physical inventory and system records, implementing corrective actions to prevent future inaccuracies. 
  • Ensure proper documentation of all inventory transactions, including material transfers, usage, and finished goods counts. 

Communication and Reporting: 

  • Maintain clear communication between the second and third shift leads, ensuring both shifts are aligned in terms of production goals, challenges, and upcoming priorities. 
  • Prepare shift performance reports (including production, quality, and safety metrics) and submit these to the Plant Manager. 
  • Ensure all shift-related documentation, such as production logs, downtime reports, and quality reports, are completed accurately by the shift leads. 
  • Facilitate shift handovers between the third and first shifts, ensuring that key information is passed on to the incoming teams. 

Employee Management: 

  • Supervise the shift leads, providing coaching, feedback, and support as needed. 
  • Monitor attendance, productivity, and performance of shift employees, working closely with shift leads to addressing any issues. 
  • Conduct regular performance reviews of shift leads and provide feedback to employees as necessary. 
  • Work with HR and shift leads to handle any disciplinary actions or performance improvement plans. 
  • Ensure cross-training opportunities are provided to employees across shifts to enhance flexibility in staffing. 

Equipment Maintenance and Downtime Management: 

  • Oversee equipment functionality on both shifts, ensuring all machines are properly maintained and serviced. 
  • Coordinate with the Maintenance team and shift leads to ensure preventive maintenance schedules are adhered to, minimizing unplanned downtime. 
  • Address any equipment breakdowns or malfunctions promptly by working with maintenance teams and ensuring timely repairs. 
  • Maintain communication with maintenance and technical teams to ensure proper handling of machine-related issues on both shifts. 
  • Continuous Improvement and Problem Solving: 
  • Identify opportunities for improving efficiency, reducing downtime, or increasing production on both shifts. 
  • Lead or participate in continuous improvement initiatives, ensuring shift leads are engaged in problem-solving and process improvement activities. 
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for both shifts, addressing any variances or issues in production, quality, and safety. 
  • Encourage shift leads and employees to contribute ideas for improving operations and resolving ongoing issues. 

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of manufacturing tools and equipment
  • IT skills, especially using data analysis software
  • Excellent organization, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, and a strong work ethic
  • Ability to create and adhere to production processes
  • Ability to write reports legibly and accurately
  • Relevant training and certification in industrial production, engineering, or any related field
