About the role
The Associate General Counsel – Pacific Region, is the primary point of contact for all legal and regulatory matters in the Pacific region, with a particular focus to support the build-up of Everest’s branch insurance operations in Australia and other insurance and reinsurance initiatives involving the Pacific region.
The position will be a critical member of Everest’s global Law Department as well as the Pacific leadership team. The individual will also be expected to work closely with members of the Asia legal team based in Singapore.
The position will report directly to the General Counsel, Everest International based in the UK as well as locally to the Managing Director of the Australian business. The role entails significant, independent interaction with senior management and business leaders both locally in Australia and internationally across Everest.
Roles & Responsibilities (include by not limited to)
- Managing legal issues impacting Everest’s expanding operations in the Pacific region and particularly in Australia, including various (re)insurance, compliance, regulatory, employment, and commercial transactions and issues
- Interfacing with local regulators, including APRA, and helping to lead and support regional management with various aspects of licensing and regulatory applications, meetings, and presentations
- Assisting with all legal and regulatory aspects affecting operations in Australia, and generally assisting in all areas of Everest’s expansion initiatives that may cover the Pacific region
- Performing corporate secretarial and governance functions for Everest’s Pacific operations
- Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements appropriate to a variety of arrangements with producers, insureds, and third parties
- Managing miscellaneous corporate transactional matters, including entity formation, due diligence, securities, and financial matters
- Staying up-to-date and providing legal counsel on legal, compliance, and regulatory issues impacting Everest’s business in Australia and the Pacific region
- Overseeing and handling regulatory prudential and conduct matters and activities of local operations to ensure compliance with regulators’ requirements and standards
- Managing non-policyholder disputes where applicable impacting Everest’s Pacific operations
- Working with underwriting teams and product development in support of new transactions and product lines
- Providing legal support to local operational areas that support the underwriting business (i.e. Claims, IT, Finance, Contract Wording), as well as contributing to wider projects thatinclude an element of Pacific operations
- Handling other corporate and/or contractual matters as needed, including drafting and reviewing non-disclosure and hold harmless agreements, software licenses, outsourcing and services contracts, leases and other contracts
Qualifications
- An Australian qualified lawyer with seven years minimum of relevant legal experience in a law firm and/or corporate in-house role.
- Desirable to have worked in non-life insurance-related matters in Australia.
