What does Brice Construction & Design LLC do?

Brice Construction & Design, Inc. (Brice) is a proud subsidiary of the Calista Corporation, the second largest Alaska Native Corporation (ANC) with 37,300 shareholders and over $950 million in annual revenues. Brice performs large heavy civil construction operations to include large scale civil projects, drainage, repair of earthen dams and levees, roadways, bridges, airfields, parks, ranges, and stormwater management, water supply, wastewater collection, and on-site wastewater treatment systems for federal, states, and local entities.

What can you expect?

As the Safety Engineer, you will work onsite in Houston, TX and you will be responsible for the safety and occupational health management of project employees, safety reporting and ensuring the project team is adhering to the company safety regulations.

How will you do it?

  • Develop, update, and maintain a Project-Specific Accident Prevention Plan.
  • Maintain presence in the field when work is being performed.
  • Perform daily safety and health inspections and maintain a written inspection log which includes area/operation inspection, date of inspection, identified hazards, recommended corrective actions, estimated and actual dates of corrections.
  • Provide injury care/first aid measures and accompany injured/ill personnel to occupational medicine clinics, as needed.
  • Perform and report on mishap/incident/accident investigations under direction of the Safety Manager.
  • Perform industrial hygiene monitoring and sampling in the field as needed, under the direction of the Safety Manager.
  • Responsible for primary documentation and reporting of any job site injuries for workers compensation under direction of the Safety Manager.
  • Collaborate with Field Management on project work performance as it related to site safety and risk management.
  • Mitigate exposure and risk on projects by enforcing all safety procedures and adhering to the company & corporate safety plan.
  • Responsible for project personnel and subcontractor compliance with safety and health requirements of project.
  • Implement and enforce accepted accident prevention plan(s) (APP’s) and activity hazard analyses (AHA’s).
  • Maintain a safety and health deficiency tracking system that monitors outstanding deficiencies until resolution. 
  • Maintain the OSHA-Form 300 and Daily Production reports for prime and subcontractors under the direction of the Safety Manager.
  • Maintain applicable safety reference materials (applicable EM-385 and OSHA Construction Industry Safety Regulations), and safety/health postings on the job site.
  • Attend and participate in pre-work meetings including Preparatory Phase Inspection meetings and periodic in-progress meetings; present topics to address safety concerns, activity hazard analyses, and other matters pertaining to safety and health.
  • Conduct weekly safety meetings for all workers.
  • Maintain job personnel safety training records.
  • Comply with all corporate risk management goals and objectives as they apply to the project.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but has authority over project personnel, subcontractors, and vendors regarding project safety and risk mitigation.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations and standards for employee health and safety and ability to implement in the workplace.
  • Knowledge of EM 385-1-1 requirements and hazard identification and safety compliance. 
  • Knowledge of standard safety equipment used in construction occupations.
  • Knowledge of construction, architectural, and building industry standard operating practices/procedures.
  • Knowledge of standard computer applications such as Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint. 
  • Excellent analytical and forecasting skills; ability to draw conclusions and justify decisions.
  • Client-centric orientation and exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Possess good organizational skills.
  • Ability to be detail oriented.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, regulations, reports, advisories and other technical documents and manuals.
  • Ability to work productively under pressure.
  • Ability to exercise confidentiality when dealing with sensitive and confidential issues and situations.
  • Ability to develop and present health and safety training classes for staff, faculty, and students.
  • Ability to facilitate and participate in group meetings.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve complex issues, both logical and interpersonal.
  • Work requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to collaborate, partner, and exercise change management skills.
  • Ability to comply with and enforce standard policies and procedures.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.

Who is Brice Construction & Design LLC looking for?

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Three (3) years’ related safety experience required.
  • Current 30-hour OSHA construction safety class or equivalent within the last 5 years required.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification required.
  • Must be able to work on secure military facilities.
  • Valid state driver’s license and must be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of Brice Civil Constructors’ Driving Policy.
  • Ability to pass a drug, driving record, and background screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupation Safety, Construction Safety management, Construction Management or related degree preferred.
  • Five (5) years’ related safety experience preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED trainer preferred.
  • USACE experience preferred.
  • Previous experience with EM 385-1-1 requirements and experience in the areas of hazard identification and safety compliance preferred. 
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English highly preferred.
