Responsibilities:

The Center for New York City Affairs (CNYCA) at The New School/Milano is an applied policy research organization. The Center works where people’s lives intersect with government and community organizations to illuminate the impact of public policy on the lives of individuals and communities. Our research focuses on what works, practical solutions, rigorous analysis, and provides real-time feedback for policymakers, providers, and communities. We have built a strong track record of creating change in the areas of education, child welfare, poverty, and juvenile justice.

The Institute for Transformative Mentoring (ITM) is a dynamic training program focused on the development of credible messengers (formerly incarcerated men and women) working in the social services fields throughout New York City. These mentors help young people navigate community violence and avoid the criminal justice system. Credible messengers are gaining systems-level recognition in New York City as an effective strategy to reduce crime and criminal justice involvement.

The Institute for Transformative Mentoring (ITM) Position:

The part-time Community-Based Restorative Justice (CBRJ) Program Manager will work closely with the ITM director to develop a new initiative that offers models and training for supporting and supervising Credible Messengers. Building on ITM’s expertise in healing-centered professional development, this new project will work towards designing and implementing a restorative justice fellowship for individuals interested in doing restorative justice work within their communities. Focusing on three major areas, this new initiative will improve organization’s approach and mission by: (1) helping credible messengers understand restorative justice work, (2) designing Community-Based Restorative Justice programs, (3) supporting credible messengers’ plans and facilitating restorative justice programs on the ground in their community. 

The program manager must have prior project management and program development experience. The project manager must have prior work experience working with credible messengers and restorative practitioners. They will help identify needs, effective practices and develop new community programs with credible messengers. They will be skilled in co-facilitating, curriculum development, documentation, event planning and coordination. 

This position is funded by and contingent upon external fundraising.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities: 

• Design the program, including partner engagement, developing and piloting curricula.
• Facilitate classroom sessions, circles, workshops, etc.
• Coordinate and execute on a participatory needs assessment and evaluation process.
• Identify and support consultants, trainers, and staff.
• Support fellows with implementing restorative justice programs.

WORK MODE

• Hybrid/Split – Employees hired for this position have regularly scheduled, consistent percentage of time on campus (ex 1-4x/week) and also work some of the time remotely. 

COMPENSATION

This is a part-time position with a pay rate of $40–$45/hr. Weekly hours will vary based on assigned project scope but may be 20-25 hours.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Knowledge of community circles (i.e. conflict circles, peacemaking circles, celebration circles, etc.)
• Knowledge of programs focused on youth mentoring, court-involved youth, alternatives to incarceration, and organizations working with Credible Messengers.
• Commitment to anti-oppression practices that center Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities and individuals.
• Understanding of restorative practices
• Understanding of social justice work. 
• Demonstrated track record of developing and implementing similar programs.
• Ability to write clearly and succinctly and to make oral presentations.
• Active listener, respectful of the contributions of others.
• Skilled problem-solver.
• Strong administrative and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and with great initiative.
