REPORTS TO: Principal
DEFINITION: To provide instructional and leadership services that prepare students with the related academic, critical thinking, computer technology, work place readiness and technical skills essential to pursuing career pathways in the automotive service industry. Essential instruction will prepare students with Automotive Service Excellence/National Automotive Technology Educational Foundation (ASE/NATEF) entry certification and employment skills.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Provide instruction and course/program management of ASE/NATEF Automotive Service Technology certified skill development in the major area of engine performance, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical/electronic systems, and preventative maintenance.
Provide and maintain a safe and orderly learning environment with equipment maintenance and enforcement of all safety regulations.
Manage school/program shop accounts and procedures essential to the operation of a school-based automotive service technology facility.
Provide instruction in teamwork, communications, problem solving, decision-making, computer technology, and hands-on technical skills, which relate to the automotive workplace.
Work with staff and post-secondary institutions to develop and maintain Tech Prep career pathways, which prepare students for apprenticeship, industry certification, and community college and university degree programs.
Use ASE/NATEF industry standards to prepare instructional material needed to effectively deliver the automotive service technology program.
Demonstrate an understanding of and provide support for student placement and participation in capstone cooperative education opportunities in automotive service and other related career areas.
Work with employers and community groups to establish, promote and participate in an active automotive service technology program advisory council.
Participate in program promotion, public relations, recruitment and selection of students for automotive service technology career completer program.
Maintain ASE/NATEF certification of school program through required personal ASE certification, program advisory committees, continuing automotive education training, and maintaining appropriate records.
Promote and support student involvement in youth organizations and automotive skills competitions.
Create an instructional environment that is conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Communicate standards, achievements, and deficiencies to students and parents. Meet with students and parents.
Maintain complete and accurate student academic, attendance, and disciplinary records. Monitor and assess students’ academic progress.
Collaborate with school administrators, other teachers, paraeducators, parents, and community members in the education of students.
Contribute to the mission of the Baltimore County Public Schools system by striving to attain school goals.
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent plus three years’ experience (of the last ten years) as an automotive mechanic or in a related field. Teaching experience preferred.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a Maryland Educator Certificate appropriate to the area of assignment.
OR
Possession of, or eligibility for, a Maryland Educator License appropriate to the area of assignment.
Possession or eligibility for ASE certification in A1 - A8 required. ASE Master Certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge and expertise with computer equipment operations and software application relating to the automotive and transportation industry.
Knowledge of curriculum, effective instructional techniques, instructional materials and equipment. Skills in preparing, implementing lesson plans and instructing students.
Skill in communicating with students, their parents, administrators, and others.
Skill in supervising students and managing behavior.
Technology competency. Knowledge of and skill in the use of database, internet, spreadsheet, word processing, and related applications.
Ability to maintain confidential information.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The work of this class is generally performed in a school-based automotive service laboratory and classroom. Work will require the ability to move around the school and classroom.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Requires attendance at after-school and evening meetings and events.
GRADE: TABCO 10-month pay scale
SALARY: $60,000-$119,522
OTHER COMPENSATION: Position may be eligible for relocation bonus, extra duty activities pay or other student activities pay as defined in the applicable Bargaining
Unit Agreement.
FLSA: Exempt
RETIREMENT: Eligible for the Maryland State Retirement System.
