What You Will Do

The Associate Laboratory Directorate for Physical Sciences (ALDPS) Graduate Student (GRA) Internship Program offers paid summer and year-round internships for graduate students in a variety of disciplines that includes engineering, physics, materials science, chemistry, computer science, business and much more. The program provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's area of study.

Examples of projects in ALDPS include, but are not limited to:

• Charged particle acceleration through controlled utilization of electromagnetic fields;
• Supporting National Security missions involving radiographic imaging, remote measurements of electromagnetic signatures, sources of directed energy (for probes and defeat), and development of new capabilities such as radiation therapy and irradiation/sterilization of materials;
• Discovering materials and exploring their properties and developing new characterization tools and practical applications of materials;
• Deliver core materials science, technology, and hardware essential to ensure weapons materials performance;
• Analysis of data acquired using the ChemCam instrument currently deployed on the NASA Curiosity rover;
• Modeling neutron scattering and yield within systems involving extreme temperature and pressure conditions;
• Design, execute, and analyze experiments that challenge, improve, and validate our understanding of fundamental physics;
• Manufacturing science related to nuclear weapons, nuclear fuels, ferrous alloys, refractory metals, and a variety of non-metallic materials; and
• Managing the budget, staffing, timeline of construction improvement at research sites.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in any Physical Science, Engineering or Business related discipline. Examples include: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Business Administration, Accounting, Human Resources, Chemistry/Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering.
• Must be enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent). Entering graduate students must provide documentation indicating matriculation into a graduate degree program.
• Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Desired Qualifications:

Student selected for GRA internships in ALDPS are most competitive when they possess the following knowledge and skills:

• Laboratory experience demonstrating an attention to detail and commitment to safety;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional and/or scientific context;
• Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting;
• Advanced knowledge utilizing various computer systems and software; and
• Innovative thinker who can find unique solutions to complex issues that may arise.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
