Substitute Short Term Grounds Maintenance Technician may be called short notice (same day) to fill in any shifts at any YCCD work-site, including MJC-East and MJC-West.

DEFINITION
Under general supervision, performs a wide range of grounds maintenance and related duties including mowing, sweeping, trenching, planting, weeding, irrigating, and pruning; installs and maintains irrigation systems; applies herbicides and pesticides; operates a variety of light and heavy-duty grounds maintenance equipment; and performs related work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the full working level class of the Grounds Maintenance Series within the Yosemite Community College District (YCCD). Incumbents in this class perform journey-level grounds maintenance, gardening and related duties in order to ensure that landscaped and naturalized areas are both attractive and functional. Grounds keeping duties emphasize mowing and edging large lawn areas, maintaining athletic fields, weeding planted areas, pruning trees and shrubs, maintaining sprinkler systems, spraying herbicides and pesticides, and supporting athletic events.
This class can be distinguished from the higher-level class of Grounds Maintenance Specialist because incumbents in that class may be assigned to perform the most complex grounds maintenance duties such as maintaining undeveloped and rugged terrain, planning and preparing fire breaks, and removing snow, and/or may serve as lead workers for an assigned shift and/or area.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Incumbents in this class work under the general supervision of a manager, working alone on routine or regular work assignments and checking with the supervisor on non-routine assignments or when in doubt as to the correct procedures to follow.
Incumbents do not directly or indirectly lead or supervise other full-time employees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
Operation, use, and maintenance of light and heavy grounds maintenance equipment.
Methods, procedures, materials, and tools commonly utilized in grounds maintenance and gardening work.
Sprinkling and irrigation systems.
Operations, services and activities of a ground’s maintenance program.
Principles and practices of horticultural maintenance and turf management.
Operational characteristics of grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.
Ability to:
Skillfully and safely operate and maintain large grounds equipment and use a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening tools.
Perform heavy manual work functions pertaining to grounds maintenance, equipment operation, and gardening work.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Perform a variety of grounds maintenance work.
Perform heavy manual labor.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education, experience and/or training that would likely provide the above-required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. Typical background patterns that would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities are:
Education: Possession of a High School diploma or GED.
Experience: Two years performing grounds maintenance duties that required the operation of large grounds equipment, tree trimming and repair, and the repair/maintenance of irrigations systems.
