Manager - NetDevOps (AUD) - Cloud Platform

Software engineering challenges at the core of a software-defined network

AMADEUS has drastically evolved the network architecture with the move to the cloud, enabling a fully decentralised, more efficient operating model, with better segmentation and enhanced security. Today, hundreds of network devices (Palo Alto, NSGs, Kubernetes Policies), deployed all around the world, are managed automatically and independently with a powerful abstraction layer, the AUD, that captures and interpretes user intent defined as code and compiles it into optimised device-specific rules and configuration.

With circa 3 million links currently deployed in the Cloud and almost a hundred daily user-defined connectivity changes, the AUD is a production system with not only extremely high expectations in terms of reliability and performance, but also in regards to user and developer experience. The functional evolution of the product is planned in close agreement with the changes on the Network, Infrastructure and Platform HLD but, given the transversal nature of the network and the large customer pool, the team interacts with and gathers requirements from almost every business unit in Amadeus.

The AUD has been implemented with distributed, cloud-native architecture and, even though it’s designed and tailored to cover the needs of Amadeus today, the group aspires to create an open standard for managing connectivity in the cloud, with a modular, extensible approach that serves the purpose of Amadeus but also of the general public.

The team in charge of the AUD Core operates as an agile team in the Infrastructure Train (SAFe ART) and its empowered to take decisions autonomously with support of the Train Leads, Line Organization and Sponsors. As the leader of the AUD Core team, you will work with members with different backgrounds and cross-functional expertise (software development, network engineering, quality assurance, product management) who are based on different sites (NCE, BLR, ERD, BHO). 

As the leader of the AUD Core team, the Software Engineering Manager will play a crucial role in shaping the future of managing connectivity in the cloud, both for Amadeus and the industry as a whole. With this context, the ideal candidate should have:

• Strong influential and people management skills. A servant leader, who empowers the individual contributors and supports the agile organization
• Experience in desgining and building distributed systems, ideally with cloud native architecture
• Experience in lean methodology and practices applied to software development. Ideally has built and maintain delivery pipelines
• Experience in operating critical services

Common Accountabilities

• Accountable for individual performance and development
• Accountable for the budget, performance and results of a medium-sized team or multiple teams of employees. Influences the resource, budget and policy planning and sets concrete development plans for the team members.
• Has a mid/long-term vision of the activity and the business, influences the department's strategy based on a broad understanding of the environment. Exposed to complex decision making.
• Proficient in technical knowledge to ensure team performs at a high level. Is recognized as a leader in own area and may formally train Specialists/Senior Specialists.
• Works with a high level of autonomy, based on management directions, escalating issues only when necessary.

Specific accountabilities

Accountability / Business acumen

• Define and share the technical/functional team roadmap and vision according to the department/division/company objectives
• Report on team activities
• Be accountable for the performance and results of a unit within own discipline or function
• Develop plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges
• Suggest alternatives / improvements / new techniques in processes, flows, operational models and plans
• Moderate budgetary impact on business

Decisions are guided by policies, procedures and business plan; receive guidance from senior manager

Technical excellence

• Timely manage the investigation and resolution of production support issues and customer inquiries
• Collaborate with other software development, architecture, solutions, and QA teams to ensure that software systems are designed for testability, stability, scalability, and performance.

Communication

Ensure timely and appropriate communication to team members regarding company/organization information

Minimum qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• 3 years of experience in software development in one or more programming languages (C++, Java, Python, Go, Rust).
• 3 years of experience in leading technically a project, team or group, being accountable for planning, executing, and supervising the execution.
• Deep knowledge on lean mindset and practices applied to software engineering
• In general, min. 5 years experience in a similar job or relevant long-term experience, project management role, or equivalent, in a large international environment.

Preferred qualifications

• Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science or related field.
• Experience leading a cross-functional technical team or group.
• Knowledge of network engineering in the cloud and/or hybrid environments.
