The County of Volusia is seeking Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) candidates to provide basic life support, pre-hospital medical care, and transportation for the ill and injured throughout Volusia County.
This position requires availability for around-the-clocks shifts.
This position includes days, nights, weekend shifts and holidays.
Hiring Range
Emergency Medical Technician: $17.0409 - $18.0634
Experience Pay for new hires with verified pre-hospital related experience:
EMT’s with less than 1 year experience can expect an offer at the minimum rate.
Shift Differential Pay
Employees will receive an additional $1.25 per hour for hours worked between 10pm and 4am which will increase to $1.85 per hour on October 1, 2023.
Lead EMT Pay
After 6 months of employment with Volusia County EMS, as a full time EMT, and continued education and training as required by the County, EMT’s are eligible to apply for “Lead EMT” status. After completing additional training and successful clearance with the Medical Director, the employee will receive special assignment pay of $1.25 per hour worked. If working on a BLS ambulance as a Lead EMT the employee will be compensated an additional $1.75 per hour worked.

Must provide proof of completion (certificates) for the following Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) training courses prior to hire:
IS-100.c – Introduction to the Incident Command System, ICS 100
IS-200.c – Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response
IS-700.b – An Introduction to the National Incident Management System

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Employment will be contingent upon the candidate successfully passing a pre-employment background check.
Must successfully complete the division's physical assessment prior to hire or promotion and if hired, continue to successfully complete the assessment on an annual basis.
Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
Must not be excluded from participating as a health care provider in insurance programs including, but not limited to, Medicare and Medicaid prior to and during employment at the County of Volusia.
All employees covered hereunder shall be non-tobacco users and nicotine free at the time of hire as a condition of employment and shall be required, as an absolute condition of continued employment, to refrain from smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or use of any type of tobacco products of any kind at all times, whether on or off duty.

Physical demands: Heavy to very heavy work. Lifting in excess of 100 pounds, prolonged sitting, standing, balancing, bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, carrying, pushing, pulling, grasping, finger dexterity, kneeling, reaching, walking, traversing uneven ground, hearing, talking, smelling, and visual acuity of color, depth perception, peripheral vision, and clarity in daytime and night time conditions to allow for driving, patient care, and other activities associated with pre-hospital medical care.
Environmental demands: Must be able to tolerate prolonged periods in indoor and outdoor environments including, but not limited to, excessive cold, excessive heat, inclement weather, humidity, rain, wind, vibration, noise, water exposure, fumes/odors, physical hazards, and potential for exposure to blood/bodily secretions and pathogens.
Mental demands: Appropriately and professionally interact with ill and injured persons. Work in stressful conditions. Read and comprehend instructions, letters, journals, maps, and physician's instruction. Write complex sentences and reports. Verbally relay information to others' and speak extemporaneously. Perform advanced mathematical calculations pertinent to job performance.
