Summary:

Baltimore Sun Media seeks a sharp, analytical and audience-savvy deputy opinion editor. In this role, you will assign, edit and write opinion pieces, while helping to identify a diverse set of contributors for our opinion pages across BSM properties and media platforms.

As a member of the editorial board, you will analyze issues and generate ideas that serve the public good, resulting in timely and provocative editorials and columns. The department’s goal is to add depth and context to the news to help readers understand and evaluate issues that matter to them and their communities, and to further the paper’s role as a driver of public conversation and policy-setting in the region. 

This role is the No. 2 editor in the organization's opinion department and will be called upon to run the department when the top editor is dispatched for special projects or is otherwise unavailable. 

What you will do:

• Serve as an opinion writer, editorial board member and content editor
• Develop new and innovative ways of delivering digital content and engaging our audience
• Diversify the voices on our opinion pages
• Use audience metrics/analytics and keen news judgment to inform decisions on content assignments and engagement strategy
• Maintain community engagement vehicles, such as newsletters and social media platforms
• Shifts may include nights and/or weekends

What you will bring:

• Excellent writing, editing and organizational skills
• Proven ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management system
• Ability to work well in a team environment, have the ability to multitask in a deadline-driven environment, and adapt constructively to change
• Must be technically savvy and able to quickly master new processes and software tools used for content editing and production
• Personal or professional experience using Web-based social media networks
• At least five years of editing and writing for a professional publication is preferred

The annual salary range is $75,000 - $90,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. This role is eligible for a bonus based on performance.
