As a Product Technologist, you will be responsible for the technical development and delivery of new Boots & Exclusive branded products. Your role would be to manage the development, technical specification, validation and compliance of new products, keeping the customer at the heart of decision making.

About the role

Reporting to the Technical Manager for Retail Owned Brands, Exclusive Brands BPC & Gift, you will be part of the technical team within the Technical Services function in Boots, working on a wide portfolio of beauty and personal care products in line with our 3 year plans. You will work with a large supply base to ensure our products are safe, legal, compliant to regulations and Boots requirements and of the right quality to delight our customers.

You must be able to coordinate the resolution of complex technical issues through your own knowledge, key relationships and ability to influence other decisions makers. To achieve this, you must maintain a high level of governance, technical competence and awareness of the industry across key beauty classifications (cosmetics & general products) and understand broader global implications.

  • Accountable for the technical product development activities including ensuring our products are legally compliant and meet our quality, sustainability and ethical standards 
  • Technically critiquing potential product offerings to help build and meet our 3 year plans
  • Coordinating and compiling the technical product data required for technical product approval and release
  • Management of technical risk and intervention of products when risks are deemed unacceptable
  • Managing stakeholders - internal and external
  • Work with sourcing to ensure suppliers have the right technical capabilities
  • Proactively seek out improvements to business processes and product development processes with suppliers
  • A compliance mindset is essential to ensure that things are done in the correct way to support long term business growth

What you’ll need to have

  • Minimum of 3 years product development experience with a proven track record in developing products from brief to market, ideally within FMCG environment
  • Proven ability to manage risk, priorities and overall timings for complex technical projects
  • Have the ability to effectively communicate to various audiences at all levels of the business
  • Have experience of ensuring product compliance with Technical Standards and Legislation following Quality Procedures
  • Have experience of working with, and managing, external supplier key stakeholders, ideally on a global basis
  • Be computer literate, with experience of using all Microsoft Office applications especially Teams, SharePoint and Excel
  • A compliance mindset is essential to ensure that things are done in the correct way to support long term business growth

It would be great if you also have

  • Science degree
  • Have technical knowledge of a wide variety of product types, including formulated cosmetic products and hard goods
